It has been a while since I've taken an Anatomy&Physiology class but with my knowledge of how tissues and cells work, I can provide a pretty reasonable explanation for this.

As scienceexplain said, to some degree, not tensing up does help a bit as you don't put extra pressure on your bones but it's not the only reason.

The child is obviously still growing, which means that a good percentage of his bones are still going through ossification, which means his bones are still cartilaginous and have some flexibility to them. This prevents them from breaking.

Another thing that has the child standing up so quickly, is due to the quick stress response that children have. At that point, the child had a greater amount of adrenaline flowing through him then the adult, which temporarily causes his brain to ignore the damage, and look for a way to get away of the stimulus causing the stress (the stimulus being the car running him over). The reason why children have an overreaction stress response is due to them not having been exposed to certain stimuli for as long as the adults have.

It is for this reason why the kid didn't pass out, but the adult did.

I call upon bioexplain to asses my response and confirm or refute it

#93 - Womens Study Major (04/03/2014) [-]
It also looks like the tire went over the neck, and not the head proper. That might help explain the liveliness of kid?
User avatar #80 - sciencexplain (04/03/2014) [-]
Most likely that he didn't have enough time to react and therefore didn't tense. When you don't tense, things are less likely to damage. In babies, there's a reaction where you can't tense and they can survive falling from buildings.

Or this kid's tough as all hell.
User avatar #140 - nagafever (04/03/2014) [-]
nigger, i heard of a grown-up who jumped from a plane and forgot his chute or it didnt work or something and he passed out for some reason. anyways, he broke a few ribs when he landed and that's it
User avatar #142 - sciencexplain (04/03/2014) [-]
When he passed out, his brain couldn't make him tense, so he hit the ground and didn't damage much. That's the effect of tensing.
User avatar #151 - nagafever (04/03/2014) [-]

iknow. i was pointing out that grownups can do it too
User avatar #196 - sciencexplain (04/03/2014) [-]
Ohh, I see. My bad.
User avatar #139 - saberrr (04/03/2014) [-]
Not only that but because he's still young many of his bones have yet to fuse together thus allowing them to move around more and prevent breakage.
User avatar #143 - sciencexplain (04/03/2014) [-]
There is that as well. Well done.
User avatar #112 - sciencexplain (04/03/2014) [-]
Side Note:

Babies also have the reflex ability to hold their breath and open their eyes underwater without thinking. They need some training, but as babies, it's really difficult for them to drown or take in water.
User avatar #109 - cakezs (04/03/2014) [-]
I fell out of a two story window when I was about a year old, I only received some bruises and no breaks or cuts or anything. So I can confirm this first-hand, I didn't have the mind to tense up or know what was going on so I was perfectly fine.
User avatar #99 - drastronomy (04/03/2014) [-]
...has this been experimented on?
User avatar #108 - shadowedge (04/03/2014) [-]
There was actually a case where a man was ripped from a mobile home by a tornado and thrown about two miles (Well, moved that far.) After landing, he had no broken bones, only minor injuries. He was okay because as he was ripped out, he was struck in the head by a lamp and knocked out, therefore unable to tense up. Scienceplain is a pretty smart cookie
User avatar #110 - drastronomy (04/03/2014) [-]
i learned this from some documentary about tornadoes once i think
User avatar #114 - shadowedge (04/03/2014) [-]

User avatar #103 - drastronomy (04/03/2014) [-]
so people have thrown babies off buildings to see if they die?

fuck yeah i wanna try that
User avatar #96 - noobieman (04/03/2014) [-]
Enginerd reporting for duty here. In addition, wouldn't the fact the car is on an uphill surface sliding down (and also noticeably falls down on it's back wheels while hitting the kid for round two) play into it? It would make the prime force in the situation be directed towards the back end of the car, therefore, the kid wouldn't have felt all the fucktons of weight being rolled over it.
User avatar #101 - sciencexplain (04/03/2014) [-]
Indeed. A downward force would have applied more pressure on his bones.
User avatar #84 - nazkillah (04/03/2014) [-]
Aren't their bones also alot more supple and don't break that fast? And I've heard about this tensing thing before, not so long ago a baby in my country fell from a fecking 20 storey high building and survived with minimal injury.
User avatar #85 - sciencexplain (04/03/2014) [-]
Yep. They can survive ridiculous injuries and come out unscathed.
User avatar #92 - zekeon (04/03/2014) [-]
Why can't we fucking retain these superpowers?
User avatar #107 - sciencexplain (04/03/2014) [-]
As you age, your brain relies more on reflex and sense to trigger tensing to prevent attacks. It's more to do with primal reaction to combat over mates and stuff and also to prevent being hit by thrown and flying objects. As you age, your body handles shock and that a lot better if you can do it right. Not really many situations where the human needs it anymore, I suppose.
User avatar #187 - kievaughnb (04/03/2014) [-]
Also, our cartilage ossifies and our bones fuse. Our ability to heal goes down as well. Evolution has turned babies into blobs of jelly that can take a hit and absorb the shock without a problem. However, that prevents any kind of real structural strength, as the bones are broken into unnecessary sections joined by nothing or cartilage. Humans need to have functional strength in terms of both muscles and bones later in life to fight off predators and to hunt. I suppose if we could feed ourselves and reproduce without ambulating, we'd retain our fluffy ass resilient bodies and look like the fuckers from WALL-E.

User avatar #33 - derpsenderp (03/28/2014) [-]
Allennis claims the meaning of babyface is someone who can't grow facial hair.

Babyface means someone who looks young. A prepubescent facial hair won't make you look older. A real beard might make you look older though.
