No, it was just the BJJ place that cost a bunch. The guy also tried to get a subscription out of me and I just don't roll that way considering my other places have been pay for the lesson you do (Either by card or at the start of the lesson)
It was also a $25 per week, regardless of if you came once or every time in the week.

I tried learning BJJ with one of the local schools but it was so damn expensive. But I guess it can't hurt to dabble around local places seeing what style suits you most.

Okay, so there was a bunch of punk kids that tried hassling me by recording me, I butterfly kicked their phone away and said "Fuck off"
Another time someone tried starting something with a friend of mine, kicked him threw him with something from either Judo or Hapkido.
Kinda boring fights but eh, it's not like the movies.

User avatar #11 - timelordeternal (07/24/2014) [-]
Went to a BJJ tournament last weekend. Lost both of my matches. It was an honor system of 1 year and under, 1-3 years, and 3 years and over. I am pretty sure the first guy I sparred with had more than a year of experience, he was far too good to be one year. Second guy beat me because I was too tired from my first match to put up much of a fight, though I think I could've beaten him if I was fresh. I was going for the 165-175 weight group, the night before I weighed in at 176, and the day of I weighed in at 184 and got beat by those two dudes that were bigger than me. All in all, first tournament pissed me off, but I'm working like to take off some weight and train for the next one in October.
User avatar #12 to #11 - alexthebest (07/24/2014) [-]
Thanks for the update! It sucks when people bend the rules and things aren't as fair as you want. I was in a three-person muay thai tournament on the 12th for a nice shiny belt. I beat the first guy (my toughest fight yet) but lost to the second. I know I would have won if I was fresh, same as your situation. I was just so exhausted by round 3 that I got kinda beat up. Lol, looked bad for the judges.

What kind of training do you want to work on for october? Any specific areas you need to work on? Don't be discouraged! I find losses lead to the most dramatic improvements.
User avatar #13 to #12 - timelordeternal (07/24/2014) [-]
Definitely, all I want now is to up my game. I'm looking to drop into the 175 and under weight catagory, and I am going to start training stand up and spider guard like crazy. Triangles are my best submission so I'm going to work on triangles from spider. I'm 6'0 so I can really put someone in some pain just by maintaining the spider, and it leads to either mount or a triangle from spider.
What kind of belt? What general region do you live in, cuz this tournament is in Iowa if you are even remotely close to that.
User avatar #14 to #13 - alexthebest (07/24/2014) [-]
I had to look up spider guard to even know what that was. Looks intense! Do you need hip flexibility?

It wasn't a major belt, just a tournament belt, 145lbs. I'm small, I know. I prefer to fight at 140, but I gotta be flexible in order to fight often.

I'm in the northwest, but I hear Iowa has an excellent BJJ and MT scene! Is that true? Lots of people from Oregon fly there for 3-day tournaments.
User avatar #15 to #14 - timelordeternal (07/24/2014) [-]
Hip flexibility is very important for flexing the guard outward on both sides to keep it tight and uncomfortable for the other person.

What is your height and typical walk around weight?

Iowa is big into BJJ, I don't know much about MT but I know that just in the midwest for BJJ we have Naga, Sasquatch Open(what I went to), and IBJJF tournaments pretty often. Sasquatch has another in October that I am going to. Losing like that really got to me, I was the only guy from my team to lose all of my matches and that ****** gotta change.
User avatar #16 to #15 - alexthebest (07/24/2014) [-]
I went to an MMA class last week after two years of no jiu jitsu and I totally sucked. Lol

I'm 5'9" and usually walk around at 158lbs, although a month in Thailand brought me down to 149lbs. Luckily I don't think I lost much muscle since I'm just as strong. What about you? 184 to 176 sounds like a pretty steep cut for a tournament. Also, what's your body type? Is that mostly muscle, or would you be able to drop even lower?

Wow, I'd love to go watch a big tournament like Naga or IBJJF. We really only have small "just for fun" type tournaments for BJJ. There are some good ones for kickboxing though.
User avatar #23 to #16 - timelordeternal (12/30/2014) [-]
5'9 my ass.
User avatar #24 to #23 - alexthebest (12/30/2014) [-]
Shhhh no one must know I'm secretly short.
User avatar #17 to #16 - timelordeternal (07/24/2014) [-]
I don't know how to describe my body type, though it's a lot of muscle with some fat. That 184 was probably a solid 6 pounds of water weight. I drank bottles and bottles of water before the weigh in without thinking about it. I have a bit too much weight on, I should really be about 165ish if I wanted to look toned/cut. If you want, I could add you on fb and you could watch my instructor's match. Sasquatch has a Loch Ness division that is invite only, they only invite people that are decently known in the Jiu Jitsu world. My name is Levi Winters and I'm in Illinois.

I need a different gi for Naga or IBJJF, as mine is black and they only allow white and blue. I think that's stupid, but whatever. I will probably buy a cheap gi just to participate at those tournaments and never wear it in class.

User avatar #8 to #7 - alexthebest (06/23/2014) [-]
Congrats on your stripe! Was the test hard?

Sorry for the late reply. I just got home from a month of training in Thailand. Such incredible training...
User avatar #9 to #8 - timelordeternal (06/23/2014) [-]
We don't actually test for stripes, the instructors will usually roll with us without telling us they're thinking about a stripe. We only test for belts. The roll was intense though, I rolled with a purple belt for about 5 minutes trying to work side control.

How was that training? What did you work with? Was it worth it?
User avatar #10 to #9 - alexthebest (06/24/2014) [-]
Wow, that actually sounds like a great way to test people. More practical.

Training was excellent and totally worth it. I learned a lot of techniques I've never even seen before, plus running 10km in 37 degree (C) weather is a whole different level of cardio training.

I just started watchin Misfits a couple days ago and finished the third season this morning. I hafta say out of all the characters Nathan is my favorite. I was watching that new mortal instruments movie yesterday, without know anything about the movie of actors and guess who I see? Robert ****** Sheehan. And now just when I slightly scroll to the comments of some post I see your glorious profile pic. Spooky **** , man.
User avatar #3 to #2 - alexthebest (11/30/2013) [-]
It's always when you learn a new word or see a new person, you see it everywhere. I haven't seen the mortal instruments movie though. Good? Or over-hyped teen novel adaptation?
User avatar #4 to #3 - deadmanisalive ONLINE (11/30/2013) [-]
It has it's moments, but there are some parts that are a bit cliche. I'm about an hour in and I'll finish it tomorrow, considering how late it is. I'm really only continuing it for Mr. Sheehan. It's kinda got one of those plots where the girl goes for the obvious choice, ya know a broody twat with issues or some **** . Fun fact, Sheehan's character is immortal in this as well.
