Don't get me wrong--the third game is OK when taken by itself. It's an epic RPG in the likes of FF7 and Kingdom Hearts. It's just when you take it as part of the trilogy that it disappoints. You're not alone either--with all my friends who played it, the ones who didn't play the earlier games all loved it.

The first and second mass effect are great, but the third is the video game equivalent to duke nukem forever--way too many expectations that it didn't live up to. I just prefer to pretend the third game was never released.

In all honesty, I hope HL3 never comes out. Because the first two games were so phenomenal and ground-breaking, we would expect more than could be delivered.

Before you hate on the above comment, take a minute to think about what would have to be in HL3 for it to be worthy of the name.

mass effect 3 was perfect. the fans created an expectation that was innacurate and infeasable. they looked at the last three seconds of the game to make all their decisons meaningful when they were being proven meaningful throughout the game. all of the games only had one or two endings so the fans expectation of eight different endings was rediculous

Mass Effect 3 was mediocre on its own, but horrible as part of the trilogy. The developers created an expectation in the fans that a series of games which emphasized player choice would have those choices matter, and then chose not to live up to that expectation. The developers thought giving the same ending with a different cutscene, and then just giving different cutscenes throughout the game with absolutely zero gameplay being affected by player choice counted as those choices mattering. The thought of the developers and publisher that cutscenes count as consequence to player choices, after so many years of build-up, was ridiculous.

so the decision to kill or save wrex meant nothing to the game? the decision to side with tali, legion, or work out a comprimise between the two had no effect? the choices you made on each characters loyalty mission had no effect on 3? your choices up to that point shaped who would be around for three which made a big difference. betraying wrex or watching mordin die was a tough choice i had to make because of decisions in previous games. i felt bad for ashley after chosing tali because she still had feelings for shepard. chosing between tali and legion with no option for comprimise because legion died in the second one made the game tougher.

everything ive learned from video games and anime can be summed up as "its not the destination its the journey" the journey through mass effect was epic with your decisions being important in the third installment when you reach the end there was only one choice in the matter. defeat the reapers. you did that with some of the greatest personalities in gaming at your side. dead or alive because of choices you made

The first two games knew how to make your choices matter; the third didn't. Granted, there were a few places in ME3 where the choice had some small part, but it was all in cutscenes. The ending, even the course of the game (the Journey) were all the same regardless of the choices you made throughout ME3, and the only impact the choices you made in ME1/ME2 had was which cutscene you were able to make. The characters, beyond a few cutscenes, didn't seem to care how each small storyline wrapped up. Choosing between Wrex and Mordin had no impact on Ashley, and the Legion/Tali line didn't have any impact beyond the conclusion of that mini-story.

The point of choices in video games is for the course of the game to be changed based on what you do, not to get a different cutscene. Even earlier games from KOTOR had your choices impact the progression of the game, albeit in a smaller scale. Bioware promised that the way you played the earlier games would significantly affect the third, but it turned out to just be a lie in order to keep people from trading in their used games. Bioware had the knowledge, the ability, and the experience to make that game live up to what they said it would, and they chose not to. I don't think they're bad people, and I don't wish ill on them; I'm just disappointed that they gave up.

ME1 Save the council or dont. only decision that effected the end of the game.
ME2 Use it or destroy it. same scenario

none of the games would have sections cut off to you or extra missions based on your decisions. no matter what the game played the exact same you would just have different cutscens and thats the fucking point. the story is being told differently. thats what everyone is bitching about because there werent eight differnet end game cutscenes your choices effected who you would run into who you would talk to and ultimately who was left standing at the end.

Is urdnot Wrex or Wreave in charge at the end? is eve alive? are you able to gain the rachni as allies? these are just a few of the changes to the third game based on the first two

I quite liked the third game, might be because it was the first mass effect game which I really played (always created new characters in Mass Effect 1 and 2 and never finished them). Got the trilogy on pc a while back to play through the first and second games properly and I have to say the trilogy together is in my favourite games list.
