Carbon monoxide bounds 200x faster to red blood cells than oxygen. When you're in a room full of carbon monoxide, you will no longer get oxygen and eventually die if you don't leave the room.

a) It would need a lot of energy to pry O2 apart ( but its not like it can't be done )
b) It would immiedately "eat up" the oxygen nearby the place of its origin. There is fair amount of O2 in the air and it wouldnt wait for your lungs to get funky.
The reason CO is dangerous, is a little more complicated. Our red blood cells can deliver O2 through our body via protein hemoglobin that is part of the RBC. You can imagine it in a way that the hemoglobin creates a slot in which O2 can latch on, travel and be detached in place of its need ( cells ). Same (as far I know) goes with CO2 that is carried via the hemoglobin in RBC from cells into lungs to be breathed out.
However, when the CO latches on the hemoglobin, simmiliarly like CO or O2, the problem starts, because CO latches on the protein much more strongly and effectively blocks the cell from passing around O2 or CO2. Therefore you red blood cells can't deliver O2 to your body and you de facto suffocate. The dizziness and stuff is because your brain doesn't have enough O2. (Brain uses O2 like google chrome uses RAM)

You have to burn the CO gas with oxygen to produce CO2 (it is volatile in the sense that it doesn´t take much energy to start the burning, but it doesn´t self.initiate). The toxicity of CO is caused by it´s high affinity with hemoglobin and you need much higher concentrations (in other words partial pressure) of oxygen than is present in atmosphere to facilitate the CO - O2 exchange in blood (in lungs). And if your blood is not oxygenated, you will suffocate.

I am honestly glad that Japan got nuked because it cemented the death of Imperial Japan and the birth of modern Japan. A few hundred thousand lives for such a massive cultural shift in a country that might have never become to influential on western country is worth it every last bit.
But that is just me, being an utilitarian shitter.
