Suppressors do a variety of helpful things, not just limited to sound reduction.

1) They reduce the noise (duh), usually to hearing-safe levels. A gun is typically around ~160db unsuppressed this number is different from LtMcG's numbers. The source he was reading must have been incorrect . A silencer will drop that by 20-30db (down to below 140db).

140db is the magic number to beat. OSHA says that any impact noise (gunshot, hammers, etc) above 140db requires hearing protection. Get it under that number and you're good. You'd still probably want hearing protection if you were planning to go shooting several hundred rounds, though.

A very good suppressor shooting subsonic rounds can reach get down to about 125db. For reference, that's you clapping your hands as loudly as you can.

2) Suppressors also change the nature and tone of the noise, sometimes making it harder for an enemy combatant to pinpoint the shooter based on sound alone. Our ears are better at detecting and locating some frequencies rather than others.

3) Suppressors reduce the visual report of the firearm - the fireball that comes out the end of the barrel. This has the obvious benefit of making it harder to find the person shooting, but also serves a more important function at night. The person shooting won't be blinded by the flash from their own gun. You preserve your night vision and you can generally see what you're shooting at.

4) Suppressors reduce recoil. As the gases shoot forward out of the barrel, they hit the baffles inside a suppressor and push it forward. This can cut reward force of the weapon by half. Less recoil, more shots on target.

The average gun produces over 115dB in sound. A suppressor reduces the sound by an average of 30dB. So a weapon with a suppressor on average will produce 85dB. Here are some examples that is near that loud:

Car wash at 20 ft (89 dB); propeller plane flyover at 1000 ft (88 dB); diesel truck 40 mph at 50 ft (84 dB); diesel train at 45 mph at 100 ft (83 dB). Food blender (88 dB); milling machine (85 dB); garbage disposal (80 dB).

It's not a silencer, it's a suppressor. It suppresses the sound. Guns are fuckin loud. It's the difference between the aloha snackbar in the next room hearing you and the aloha snackbars in the next town hearing you.

In the case of home defense guns it's because if you're in a situation in which you need to grab your shotgun, you don't have time to get ear protection too. It's better to have a shotgun with a suppressor that you can grab at a moment's notice, because every second you spend grabbing your ear protection is another second for them to get the drop on you.

I just wouldn't ear pro. Yeah, they're going to ring for a bit, but I am not fucking around waiting for Tyrone when I can just suffer a little hearing loss.

Hence why you use a suppressor.
