If we take a character and change him around whenever we feel like it, that character loses all value, it loses what makes them "real" and instead we'll be left with a name. Don't take a racist character and PC them up, don't take a white character and make them black, or vice versa. The characters value lies in their consistensy of being themselves.

Would Nelson Mandela really be changed if he was played by Mel Gibson in a biopic?

Race change is a huge thing for a character, which is why Human Torch in Fant4stic had a big backlash.

I'd be fine with a spin-off agent in the Bond universe, with Idris Elba taking the helm of, say, 009, another 00 agent, but not 007.

007 is James Bond, who was based off of the White Rabbit.

But another 00 agent is fine.

that's an entirely different matter though:
That's a direct biography: as in its supposed to represent nearly true events as they happened, plus a big part of what Mandela did was racially motivated, fighting racism and segregation in south Africa, it wouldn't make any sense for Mel Gibson to be cast as him

But Bond might be based on a real person, it is still mostly fiction and is presented as such and the plot lines have no racial connections, plus at this point the bond films are becoming more removed from Fleming's books, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall seem to be original from a quick search.

There's a huge reason for him not to be black.

Sure, Bond has changed actors, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Bronson, Sean Connery, Daniel Craig.

But all those dudes are white.

James Bond is white, that's a factor of Bond that's set in stone, because Bond is based off of the White Rabbit, a former secret Agent in the British army, and he wasn't black.

EON shares your stance, and what they say goes with Bond. They have a strict criteria for Bond.

1) The person who plays Bond, Must be from the UK or the Commonwealth (depending on who you talk to). This blocked Eric Braeden from playing Bond, who was from Germany and was living in the US at the time. John Gavin was denied because he was American. Mel Gibson being from Australia was denied for not being British. Christopher Lambert was denied because he was an American born Frenchman. I am sure his being legally blind didn't help matters.

2) The actor must be sophisticated. He can not be brash.

3) He must fit the character, the character cant change because of the actor.

So as long as EON owns Bond, he will never be Black, gay, or anything other than a straight, white, Patriotic British man.

It's funny because George Lazenby is Australian. But I think they were more lax back then with who they wanted to play Bond because they were asking all sorts of non-British people if they wanted to play him

#110 - BmanX (12/03/2015) [-]
They pretty much have to be British. Canada is part of the Commonwealth, and you know there will never be a Canadian Bond.

He wasn't hired because he wasn't British and because apparently the producers didn't like how short he was. Bond's gotta be tall
#120 - sheimi (12/03/2015) [-]
So what does this has to do with the original argument regarding Lazenby

#121 - BmanX (12/03/2015) [-]
"Mel Gibson being from Australia was denied for not being British."

This is what the other guy said, that is what I was responding to.

Respond to him then and not me? I did not make that argument at all.

#128 - BmanX (12/03/2015) [-]
You told me to look at 59 to see why he wasn't chosen. I'm telling you why what 59 said is wrong. I'm not arguing about Lazenby with you.
#130 - sheimi (12/03/2015) [-]
I was saying Lazenby can be Bond because he is from the commonwealth and you try to derail the argument and saying but Mel Gibson... I'm not interested in him why he hasn't been bond. I was replying to you about Mel Gibson so you could understand there could've been some other reasons he has not been Bond despite being from the commonwealth.
User avatar
#131 - BmanX (12/03/2015) [-]
I just had you confused with the other guy at first, and that's why I was pointing out Gibson since he was Australian and that's the only reason the other guy gave for why he wasn't chosen.

My point still stands that being in the Commonwealth doesn't mean anything anymore. They have to be from the UK to even be considered. I was just pointing out how this wasn't always the case, like with Lazenby. Though with him, he might not have even let them know he was Australian. He lied quite a bit when trying to audition.
#132 - sheimi (12/03/2015) [-]
Might have lied? Sources? I Have to leave for work now so I won't be replying in a couple of hours.

#133 - BmanX (12/03/2015) [-]
He lied about his previous acting jobs, pretending like he was a very experienced actor, when he was really just a model. He came clean eventually, but that kind of showed how good of an actor he was to the producers. So I guess they would have had to find out at some point he was Australian.

That was a long read. Yes he told he acted in China and Hungary and told the very next day to the director he had not acted in China and Hungary. Nothing about him lying about him being Australian.

I'm glad to know that no amount of fru-fru activism will make them make Bond anything other than straight, white and British as fuck.

Also, needs number 2 and 3 are the reasons Mel Gibson couldn't be bond, Mel Gibson always plays, well, a fucking psycho, and seeing a calm, suave, debonair Mel Gibson sounds....creepy.

alright i see your point, didn't think of the fact that he was based off a real person

But I still feel a black bond would be fine, a big fan theory is that 'james bond' is just a code name that gets passed down, same with 'Q' and 'M', which justifies the actor changes
besides that, would bond as a character really be changed if he became black? I say if the actor does a good job with it then they have every right to play the character
