I think started with the original Clash of the Titans, then later used in God of War, then in the remake of Clash of the Titans.

Christianity also take stories from other cultures and say they are stories of God, but really they have origins set in Greek, Roman, Egypt, Messopotamia and other origins. Especially the story of Jesus which is well known among many Christians but has it's roots set in Egyptian myth but has to do with their Sun god, Horus which then has it's roots set in astronomy.

That was the way the church converted people from mixed cultures. Christianity absorbed the myths and holidays of specific religion in order to convince others to convert. In fact, Christmas is derived from the Nordic Yuletide. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the Christianization of Yuletide was used to convert the Saxons (I could be wrong, but I read it in a history book and not the internet). Not really related to Pluto, but I felt like sharing.

Actually Hades is well more known now for just being the God of the Underworld, most people now a days don't really care for ancient mythology, but I find it fascinating,
User avatar #62 - TheWayneAdams (06/04/2012) [-]
History gets lost with each generation. It mostly gets corrupted by movies based on mythology, and they make a few small mistakes, but those mistakes carry on. E.g. the Kraken wasn't part of Greek mythology, instead it was Scandinavian, but people don't know that.

Her name is Venetia Burney and I have been lied to my whole life. I retract my statement but the truth still is that the name was proposed by an eleven year old girl.
User avatar #58 - TheWayneAdams (06/04/2012) [-]
That is correct, it is coincidence that Pluto the dog and Pluto the planet share the same name, but the 11 year-old named the planet after the Greek god of the underworld who was known for his helmet of invisibility. It was her way of describing how the planet was difficult to see.

And I know it isn't a planet before anyone points that out, it is easier to write repeatedly than dwarf-planet.

Pluto was the Greek god of the underworld, also known as Hades.

The girl who named it, knew she was naming it after the Greek god, it was a coincidence that Pluto the Dog was drawn the same year.
