I said CARRYING guns. As in CCW holders. Considering that's what his post was about.

interesting since I only got into guns at 21 and have since also started carrying and it has not altered my thoughts on suicide or homicide. in fact I have become a more docile individual and tend to stay out of/try to get out of conflicts/arguments. I don't see an issue.
also, no training in my state to get a concealed carry license, and no license at all to carry openly loaded pistols/rifles/shotguns. I do not see the issue, locally.

I guess this is just an American cultural difference between the rest of the world. Gun ownership has never been about self defense, hunting, or any of those seemingly practical applications it was always been the Big Check in our check and balance system. Ultimately if the American government became too corrupt or pissed enough people off that the power of the people would be able to act as a deturrent or even overthrow the government. Power comes from the barrel of gun.
#182 - reginleif (01/30/2014) [-]
Exactly, most people are GOOD citizens who wouldn't go around shooting everything that moved. However, a position of power like the police and the government is dangerous to those who would abuse it, for this reason we arm EVERYONE who wants to be armed.
Because most people are good, and good people outnumber the bad an armed populace serves as a way to "weed out" jackasses in power.
#186 - electrictroll (01/30/2014) [-]
Yeah but if we give EVERYONE guns assholes will be armed, and then they can easily use said weapons. Why not have background checks, and training good people will still be able to get guns, but a lot of said jackasses would be unable to.
And the whole "weeding out jackasses in power" argument is mute in the western world where we have functioning democracies, bad people with power tend not to have it for long.

If NOBODY is allowed guns, then assholes are the only ones armed. EVERYONE armed at least makes it so that a situation can be stopped with a few deaths, instead of a massacre.
And the whole "weeding out jackasses in power" argument is mute in the western world <
No, no it really isn't. Western democracies aren't the end all be all for civilization. They can be corrupted, people can be voted in who won't leave willingly. The idea that simply because we're western, we can't turn bad sounds pretty dumb to me actually. Perfect systems don't exist they must be checked up on constantly.
#203 - electrictroll (01/30/2014) [-]
I never said no one should be allowed guns, all i said is that we should do what we can to keep guns out of the hands of bad people.
And i never said that democracies can't be corrupted but i think it can be solved without an armed rebellion but with DEMOCRACY people will realize were things are going and VOTE for the good guy not shoot the bad guy. No matter what the people wil always hold power with or without guns.
#204 - reginleif (01/30/2014) [-]
Thing is that nobody can oppose anything under that logic. It sounds good on paper, who DOESN'T want to keep guns from "bad people"? I sure don't want bad people having guns! The thing is when the laws to keep guns from bad people keep "good people" from enjoying their rights, you essentially punish them for what bad people will do. And I already told you that we shouldn't go around making laws punishing people for things they MIGHT do, or assuming guilt.
And democracy only works because of guns, the military/police force who back the edicts of the people. An election wouldn't MEAN anything if say the Chinese took over your country the day after.... even today in our supposedly enlightened age we still haven't found a way to get around "might is right".
#208 - electrictroll (01/30/2014) [-]
Why do you drag this out of proportion i say i don't want people who have a history of say murdering people to eb able to legally buy any gun they want, yet you take it as me saying no one should be able to have a gun.
I say if they get basic training in gun handling, and a gun permit (Which the only requirements for are said training, a clean slate when it comes to psychosis, and no history of repeated, or serious violent crime). You are allowed to go wild.
And with the "what if the chinese invade" is mute because of NATO no country in the world could hope to beat the rest of the world.
#223 - reginleif (01/30/2014) [-]
I wasn't going the NOBODY should have a gun route this time though. I was mentioning that by definition restrictions apply to everyone, not just a certain group of people. When you make a restriction to say...slow down lines at the airport to allow agents there more time to check for explosives then not only are you slowing boarding time for potential terrorists, but also everyone else. Same thing goes for gun control, when you make laws making it harder to people to get guns, there's always the risk of harming good people.
>I say if they get basic training in gun handling, and a gun permit
This implies permission, gun ownership (along with all sef-defense) is a right. I'm in favor of a well trained population, but those courses cost money and time. Nobody ever makes you take a 1000$ course on how to speak.
because of NATO**
exaclty, military force is behind the power of democracy. The will of the people is great, but only if it can be enforced.
