Everything really boils down to the artist's contract with their label as well as their individual marketing abilities. Most of the money that the millionaire artists have comes from other avenues outside of music like being the face of a product. KISS is a perfect example.

Too bad the music industry is all about money. If you wanna be famous, you have to sell out. If you want money, sell out. If you wanna do your own thing forever, just pray to whatever you believe in that it lasts and that people will listen to it.

thats arguable
its mostly due to the fact that metal bands are less inclined to "sell out" and give the rights of their music away for some money
plus metal has, probably, the most loyal fanbase of all music genres

That's definitely true about genre loyalty. I'm a living breathing example, haha. But by selling out, are you referring to licensing tracks (to video games, movies, etc)? Or are you referring to writing songs to be performed by someone else (a la nearly every popstar)? As a musician, I certainly wouldn't have a problem with the former.

All the same, metal musicians very rarely make enough money through music, at least not enough to live and support ourselves on. Even the frontman of Testament has a day job when not touring. Here's a MetalSucks article on it.
