I once talked to my friend who rides speed bikes.
I asked how fast he normally went, in the cities, he goes the speed limit, but in the country he doesn't.
And this is his actual answer
"If I'm going 80 KPH and I hit a rock I spin out, crash and am paralyzed. If I hit a rock going 180, I fly right over.
Same with bigger things. You hit a deer going 80, and neither of you walk away, you hit a deer going 200 and you just slice through it"

I buy games I will enjoy and get my moneys worth.

Just because their indie or a smaller company doesnt mean they get thrown a bone.

You make a good game ill buy it.

You make a tolerable game ill torrent it.

You make a mediocre game you get neither.

It's been done twice. Neither of the games were properly playable at launch (diablo 3 and sim city). EA directly lied about the server taking strain off computer processing.

Not to mention that servers aren't permanent. If i'm playing a game that NEEDs an online connection it damn well better be for MY benefit, not that of the dev. MMORPGs, League of legends etc.

All it does is give the dev/publisher a huge amount of power over the consumer and is the next step in fucking over gamers by removing their consumer rights by using things in a grey area of the law. Ever wonder why MS used MS points? It's because legally they don't have any obligation to refund games bought on their store due to the games not being bought with actual currency. A technicality to fuck over consumers.

And one thing you forget is that by the time the regular person has internet fast enough to cloud game without lag, they will have fast enough internet that download size barely matters. more memory is already dirt cheap to buy too.

MMO's have been doing this for years. And i think we've seen from that it wouldn't be anything special. Especially considering most AAA devs want to either charge you for dlc or go straight to a sequel after their first game.

It's funny since I don't know anyone complaining about either of those things.

Gaming world too small? with games like WoW, The Elder Scrolls series, The fallout series, and the countless MMOs I don't think the size is the problem, they're enormous as is, and in case you're talking about "One big world without loading screens" What about planetside 2?
As for download size that can easily be fixed by improving the speed of internet, which will happen regardless. Not to mention THIS IS WHY PEOPLE BUY PHYSICAL COPIES ON A DISK. All the data is there and you just have to install it, granted it may be a bit more hassle if it requires multiple disks but that will also improve with time, just look at the bluray disks.

On on top of all that you haven't given proof for any of what you've said. The games that have taken "advantage" of always online all flopped.
TL;DR Please give source for claims.

My dad got a new laptop a few months ago and he works in a rural area without wifi.
He wanted me to help him put games on his laptop(Windows 8 makes you install them from their stupid app store instead of them being pre-installed) so I did it for him. about a week later he calls and says they aren't working and his computer keeps telling him to hook up to the internet. I did some research and it turns out windows 8 pulled an Xbone on us.
MFW I found out

What if I don't want a vast, online world? What if I want all the files of the game to be on my hard-drive, for any game that is not exclusively single player? Storage devices are so vast now that the size of a game really isn't an object. Hell, World of Warcraft and all the expansions takes up a good 40gb. Nobody complains about having to download all of that. (I'm sure some people do, but they do it anyway.)
Not to mention that with downloaded games, you effectively do not own the game. You have purchased a license to use the software, as the company allows, which is also often cancellable for any reason by the company in question. Give me physical media any day; I actually own the game, then.
Always online games, especially the major releases, cause vulnerabilities in online connections. If a hacker knows a vulnerability caused by Diablo 3 that is easy to exploit, boom, he's got a botnet 14.5 million computers strong. Games that do not require an always-on internet connection make it easier to secure your computer.

So screw the potential, security, ownership, and control over my property are more important to me.

#14 - dedaluminus (08/10/2013) [-]
What about them? I don't need to be always online for updates. Updates are a sporadic thing.
#23 - bazda (08/10/2013) [-]
Not that you even need them, most of the time. If something bothered you about a game back in the day, or if there was a bug, or a glitch preventing you from enjoying or completing the game, you get online and look for a patch. Simple as that. I agree with you. All of this always online bullshit bugs the crap out of me.

well seeing as how the poster child for that so far has been games like sim-city and diablo 3. my hopes for the tech is not very high

Yeah, don't praise always-on for something it can do someday. Despise it for what it does now.

And don't forget the first big one, Assassin's Creed 2, where the servers went down on release weekend and legit customers couldn't play the game they bought.
