Thanks for your advice! It was lots of fun even though so far the encounters in early game have been quite stereotypical, which is good for us first timers.

Ya. Bandits and goblins are almost guaranteed for first encounters. But glad you had fun. I'm interested in hearing more about your campaign!

My DM already gave me that advice but thanks! I was thinking more along the lines of how useful a language actually is (depends on campaign I guess) or any obvious things I might be missing.

Ya, language can be a hard thing to predict, especially if the DM hasn't given any hints as to what the world consists of. Go with what you think would be fun for your character with the language. I'm not sure if there's much else I could give for advice at the moment as most questions will arise when the game has started. But I hope you have fun! D&D (and tabletop games in general) are a great way to build strong friendships and just speaking skills.
