King Ramses Curse. This episode... fucked me up. Countless nightmares... It was added on to a VHS tape my family rented... I would be in the bathroom. In the middle of the night. Standing there for over an hour. Never opening the door because of sheer fear.

You're asking a question about a genre which is highly subjective in appeal. What one person finds scary might be laughable to someone else.
With that said, here are some films I've seen that might do what you're asking.
The Grudge. It's basically the sister movie of The Ring, so if you thought that was scary at least a bit then I would give it a try. By the way, The Ring is also one of my favorite horror films, and when I first watched it in second grade it gave me nightmares for weeks, Now I still think it's creepy, but more in an atmospheric way.
Paranormal Activity/The Blair Witch Project. IMHO the two best found footage films out there, for similar reasons. Generally, you're either going to love or hate these two. Personally I love them and when I watched them with my fiancee she had trouble sleeping, so there you go.
The Girl Next Door (2007). This isn't so much as "scary" as it is completely fucked up and disturbing. I've seen a lot of shit in my day but this is one of the only films that actually made me feel awful from watching it.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). Despite what you may think, this is not a gorey film. It has a ton of great atmosphere in it and it's one of the few older horror movies that I think is legitimately creepy and disturbing. The imagery sticks in my mind and I love the realistic, almost documentary feel it has. It's a bit dated in appearance but it doesn't get in the way of it's effectiveness.
I also highly suggest Condemned: Criminal Origins if you're interested in a horror video game.

This would be my suggestion as well. Mostly because you don't really have any expectations, then it goes over the top.
