While they are both deadly, hurricanes definitely come out on top. Hurricanes cause about $3 billion in damage each time they touch ground in the United States and about $5 billion annually.

The roughly 1,000 tornadoes that strike the United States each year cause about 10 times less in damage, or about $500 million in total.

Plus as I previously stated, they spit out a shitload of tornadoes. Each tornado may not be as strong as one of yours, but try being surrounding by 5-10 fucking tornadoes, at the same fucking time, while there's a huge fucking hurricane overhead. Tornadoes do a lot of short-term damage to a small area, while hurricane causes massive damage to to several states at once. There's an insane amount of flooding, power outages that can last a week or more, and people can even be stuck without water for extended periods of time.

After a tornado you come up from your basement, and hope you house isn't gone.

After a hurricane, you hope your house isn't gone, and even if it isn't you're potential stuck without water, power, and you might even be stranded because of massive flooding.

A single tornado, however large, is almost childs play in comparison.

Touche, but the only reason Irene is causing that much destruction in the upper East Coast is because they have no hurrican preparation systems whatsoever. Right now it's a tropical storm... Everyone down south from Galveston to Charleston could play a football game in that weather. That's why you're being laughed at. Even though its causing a lot of damage, thats only because of lack of preparation or any safety measures at all, because they usually dont need them. My point is, if this same storm rolled through the south, it would barely be on the news.

Another reason why people are laughing at the north is because you guys are treating it like its life threatening. So far, Irene has only killed 4 people, one who was a retarded surfer who thought it would be fun to catch some hurricane waves. It's really not that deadly compared to some of the stuff down south.

Also back to the earthquake issue, its basically the same thing. In california a 5.8 earthquake wouldnt even make news... I know that because I lived there for 5 years. its just a whole overreaction thing

dude i have to seriously disagree on that.

Thousands would have died in New York if they didn''t have advance warning about irene... think of how densly populated it is, as well as how water would quickly fill up the subways. Hours before the storm New York was an eerie ghost town, and a good thing too, it saved lives

You have what, 5 minutes for a tornado? Sure we get torado waatches and warnings but so often nothing happens that you just start disreguarding them, then when a tornado actually happens youre screwed

but even if you get ready for every tornado warning, which is like every week in spring, you still only havelike 10 minutes notice

it really does have alot to do with it people can leave ahead of time to aviod death or injury but not with a tornado iv been threw many even lost a firend because of one they can from in just a few minutes and wipe out a whole city with out even a warning sign.. but hurricans start off the cost of africa the warm air cold water mixs makes a hurrican (or something along the lines of that) and you can watch its progression on tv

It's so dismal that is shouldn't even be mentioned. I hate everyone up the coast right now. "Omgee This is the worst thing to happen evar. You other states don't have shit like this. You don't know what this is like and we have it so bad right now guys. This is so much worse than katrina or a 8.5 quake. God you guys have so sympathy we are having a hard time. I mean its raining! They actually do... They're dozens of times more powerful, they just don't last as long.

But length doesn't matter after it's been more than a minute with the power of a tornado.

Check out Joplin, Missouri. Entire city gone. 'Nuff said

From the bottom put in your finger to push it out a bit, as far as you can.
Next, push down on the rubber holder that it froze in until it is pretty much fully out, I usually just grab it after that.
