I never said that Kelvin was created before Celcius. In your previous post you said "Hey, we really need something to represent infinite zero. Let's just take our centigrade and push it 273 units that way." But this is not what happened. They first found the absolute zero and started measuring kelvin from there. Then they found out that the difference was 273.15. But you say they just randomly picked that number and shifted it to create kelvin
User avatar #57 - drulludanni (11/07/2014) [-]
what Nullifier means is that the kelvin system is based on the Celsius system, for example there is still 100 degree difference between melting and boiling point in both Kelvin(373K - 273K ) and Celsius(100C-0C) so essentially Kelvin Celsius shifted by 273
User avatar #40 - Nullifier (11/06/2014) [-]
Oh, I think there was just a fundamental misunderstanding here.

The part of my post that said "Hey, we really need something to represent infinite zero" was my referring to Lord Kelvin's expression of the need for a scale with absolute zero as the null point. I know that they had discovered absolute zero.

My point from that was that Kelvin isn't any different from celsius; it simply has a different null point, and that's just because Lord Kelvin decided to keep the same order of magnitude that the centigrade system already had.

I didn't mean that they randomly picked 273.15 as the null point, just that they were like "well now we have this absolute zero point, let's just take our existing system and shift the null point we're already using (water freezing) to this new null point (absolute zero)."

Fahrenheit proposed his temperature scale in 1724, basing it on three reference points of temperature.[9] In his initial scale (which is not the final Fahrenheit scale), the zero point is determined by placing the thermometer in brine: he used a mixture of ice, water, and ammonium chloride, a salt, at a 1:1:1 ratio. This is a frigorific mixture which stabilizes its temperature automatically: that stable temperature was defined as 0 °F (−17.78 °C). The second point, at 32 degrees, was a mixture of ice and water without the ammonium chloride at a 1:1 ratio. The third point, 96 degrees, was approximately the human body temperature, then called "blood-heat"

If you have only 1 reference point, how are you going to decide what the difference between two temperature values is?
User avatar #31 - Einsty (11/06/2014) [-]
I've never once seen a fahrenheit scale on a thermometer that wasn't an american import. And nobody used those, because we all used Celsius. And circular representation works in base 10 just as well as it does in base 24, except base 10 is used everywhere else, so it's more efficient to read by a normal human brain. And about the span of temperatures, each thermometer has a different one, so it doesn't really matter.

And to pour my 2 mililiters into this shitstorm, 0°C is an important temperature that directly affects the structural stability of almost every building.
User avatar #32 - Nullifier (11/06/2014) [-]
Of course it is. I'm not (nor have I ever been) disputing the validity of the degree Celsius (or Kelvin, for that matter).

I simply pointed out that the magnitude of the degree Celsius, while tied to the rest of the metric system, is equally arbitrary. Fahrenheit gets way too much flak.

So yes they have the same order of magnitude, but no, that is not what I meant to say. I did, indeed, mean that the Kelvin scale is just the degree Celsius having undergone a shift, i.e. "shifted."

Or you know, 0°C is when regular water freezes, and 100°C is when it boils. You're making it way more complicated than that, you're doing it far less right than we are.
#157 - Womens Study Major (11/07/2014) [-]
Well here's the first thing you're doing wrong: Celsius is just "hey lets do base 10 because we like it. It's nice and easy to calculate **** with."

Whatever system fahrenheit uses will be pointless, because if you can create an equally functional system that is easier to calculate with, you're doing the wrong thing in picking the more complicated system.

Add to that that everything you said was a bunch of bull, you get one incredibly stupid statement.

#23 - Pred (11/06/2014) [-]
actually Fahrenheit was just pulled out of satan's anus when somebody said "hey let's try to find the dumbest temperature unit ever" whereas Celsius has the same dimension as Kelvin, only it's been shifted so that its zero is at water freezing point rather than absolute zero for convenient use in everyday life.
User avatar #29 - Nullifier (11/06/2014) [-]
Erm..no, that's literally not how it happened at all. Nobody said "Let's try to find the dumbest temperature unit ever," and frankly it's a bit annoying that your uninformed position

Celsius (or Centigrade) has been around longer than Kelvin. Kelvin was the one that was shifted, not celsius. Kelvin uses one point of reference while Celsius and Fahrenheit use two - absolute zero, water's freezing and boiling point, and cooling brine and human core body temperature, respectively.

The convenient use in daily life is the strong point of Fahrenheit. The nature of the system has water's freezing and boiling point at a 180 degree separation - ideal for thermometers, ovens, etc.; many countries who make use of Celsius as a primary system of measurement actually do use Fahrenheit for circular representation.

While Celsius and Kelvin might feel more 'official' by being part of the metric system, there's nothing any more special about them than fahrenheit. Base 10 honestly isn't that special and doesn't deserve the attention it gets. It's just "we have 10 fingers so it makes it easier to count." A base 24 system (divisible by 3, 4, 6, 8, and 12) would be more functional. That's just not the way things turned out; what can you do?
User avatar #52 - bronynexgen (11/07/2014) [-]

Damn right he will! Also, are you able to get me a Lavitar? Only i need one for breeding purposes for a Tyrantrum with move biting moves.
User avatar #172 to #171 - Nullifier (11/14/2013) [-]
Would Pupitar do?

I can always breed you a larvitar really quick, if not.
User avatar #173 to #172 - andimac (11/14/2013) [-]
Actually a pupitar would be easier, thanks. I just need something capable of learning Fire fang, Ice fang and Thunder fang, and Tyranitar is the easier to get. Thanks
User avatar #174 to #173 - Nullifier (11/14/2013) [-]
Yeah, I'll just shoot you a high level pupitar. It'll take, like, 10 levels to reach T-tar (55)
User avatar #175 to #174 - andimac (11/14/2013) [-]
Fair enough, anything you want for it?
User avatar #176 to #175 - Nullifier (11/14/2013) [-]
Er...gimme a second, actually, I just realized I traded my pupitar the other day.

I'll have one in 20 seconds.

no preferences for trades, either, you already gave me most of what i want
User avatar #177 to #176 - andimac (11/14/2013) [-]
Fair enough, I'll just battle this randomer while i wait.
User avatar #178 to #177 - Nullifier (11/14/2013) [-]
Alright, ready.

That took WAY too long. Found a bunch of durants.

User avatar #163 to #162 - gremious (11/26/2012) [-]
I guess we do, i don't think there should be too much of a difference though...
Also, i'm heading to bed right now D:
*Hugs*
Or at least, very soon!
User avatar #164 to #163 - Nullifier (11/26/2012) [-]
Yeah, much different. I just got home after a somewhat long day.
User avatar #165 to #164 - gremious (11/26/2012) [-]

Approaching 4 PM

User avatar #150 - gremious (11/21/2012) [-]
I'm here then! ^^
*Hugs*
And it's no problem, i'm used to late responces!
It happens :3

I see. I have all the firends i need to chat to here on Fj and on skype, so i'm alright without FB! ^^
User avatar #151 to #150 - Nullifier (11/21/2012) [-]
I moved a couple of years ago to a new town, I use skype to keep up with my old friends and facebook to maintain the new ones...though i occasionally video chat some of my new friends and i have some facebook groups with old ones...not sure if that's relevant :/
User avatar #152 to #151 - gremious (11/21/2012) [-]
I see! May i ask where did you move to?
*Hugs*
Doesen't matter if it is relevant or not, you can be as random as you can, as long as it can continue a conversation, and i'd say almost any sentance can! :3

Also, do you mind the hugs? ^^
User avatar #153 to #152 - Nullifier (11/21/2012) [-]
Moved near chicago, illinois...and no, of course I don't mind hugs. Who doesn't mind hugs?
User avatar #154 to #153 - Nullifier (11/21/2012) [-]
Rather..who doesn't like hugs*****************************************

slightly different meaning there...
User avatar #155 to #154 - gremious (11/21/2012) [-]
No problem, i understood what you meant!

And yay! That's good ^^
*Huggles*

Near Chicago, Illinois...That sounds good! Not heard much about it, but from what i know, it's quite nice!...i think!
Is it?
User avatar #156 to #155 - Nullifier (11/21/2012) [-]
Pretty nice, I guess. I live in a nice neighborhood, at least...though I'm currently in the Netherlands and should probably get to bed soon >:l
User avatar #157 to #156 - gremious (11/21/2012) [-]
Well, that's good i suppose!
I'm currently in Bulgaria, i moved here a couple of years ago! So i should really head to bed and i am quite tired..
Well, since we both need to sleep, i'd suggest let's go and sleep! It's better to get some rest earlier. Not quite 'early' for me, but still! So mind if i depart for today? We can always talk a bit later!
(Also, i just realised i said "Well" quite a couple of times..)
User avatar #158 to #157 - gremious (11/21/2012) [-]
Ah, nevermind that "well" part, i said it only twise, my mind is being screwy with me!
User avatar #159 to #158 - Nullifier (11/21/2012) [-]
Not a problem :P

Alright, we'll talk again later?
User avatar #160 to #159 - gremious (11/21/2012) [-]

yeah...i dont exactly make that kind of committment but any time i have an opportunity i take it. so far i've saved 4 people from suicide and done a ton of basic helping out with peoples problems. its pretty easy because...well, long story
User avatar #110 to #110 - clairejen (07/12/2011) [-]
well its not really a commitment of mine but its a good thing to keep in mind. if youre willing to share, ive got time

hmm well it's more of a life story thing...and i always feel like kind of an attention whore when i tell it, even though that's not what im trying to do at all
User avatar #112 to #112 - clairejen (07/12/2011) [-]
so sick of the term "attention whore" you only have so many years to say what you wanna say, if its something WORTHWHILE you may as while, ya know? like I said, if you wanna share im listening, and if not i understand.
User avatar #113 to #113 - Nullifier (07/12/2011) [-]
well sure but first a couple things. i dont want pity or anything, not that im expecting it, and the other i have to go to sleep after this.
Ok, so here's my mom, irresponsible and getting herself knocked up out of high school. I'm born and i get ferried back and forth between my parents, bout a 3 hour drive. When i'm 2, my dad is driving me home when there's a car accident and he dies. I broke my leg. I then live with my irresponsible mom and new stepdad, who has anger problems and would hit me. They had a kid who inherited the anger problems and (embarassingly enough) would hurt me because i was too kind to hit him back or anything. At 5, my mom Abandoned me with my improving stepdad. All of this confused my little 5 year old self and gave me REALLY BAD separation anxiety. I didn't make a friend for 7 years of school. I was smart as **** , so i was nerdy too. I was bullied a **** ton and at the end was feeling really pretty bad, but then i switched schools and got a chance to start over. In no time, i was on top of that ******** and turned my swag on. I was always inwardly kind of a ladies' man, and i did pretty well for those two years. It all really just had towait for when i was old enough to understand about my mom leaving and my dad dying. The separation anxiety still affects me though, im always afraid to do things because deep down i feel like people will hate me or leave me if i mess up. I'm really really shy now because of that. It just really sucked for a long time.
Because of that, i could relate to people who were dealing with bullies and family problems, and like i said i convinced 4 of my friends not to kill themselves. When my friends have problems, a lot of the time they come to me. I'm good with relationships but bad with relationships involving me. I've set up so many of my friends and helped with so many relationship problems but i've been single for a year (mostly because of shyness, i know many girls who like me/asked me out) and out of room
User avatar #114 to #114 - clairejen (07/12/2011) [-]
After all that, it's honestly how amazing you have managed to turn out. You'd think most kids would be completely cold and bitter, but you seem to have your set together. Although his situation isn't quite as bad, you remind me of someone...my best friend actually. I know you have to go, but if youre ever on, comment/message me and ill answer when I come on, kay dear?
User avatar #115 to #115 - Nullifier (07/12/2011) [-]

but still dude it's just one comic, if anything it's getting him more fans, before i saw it on here i had no clue what questionable content was now i've read every comic up to number 266

w/e i read them all in one day when i first found them..I have an email conversation going with Jeph and he acknowledges me as one of his biggest fans. It is good to spread publicity but not at his expense
User avatar #75 to #75 - decorius (04/25/2011) [-]
but it's not at his expense, it's just spreadin the love man if the OP would have charged cash to see it then that's cheating him but all he was doin was just postin sumthin funny, nobody is here to steal content were just sharing funny junk with each other bro it's all love man ( hippie voice )

User avatar #60 to #60 - CannonFodder (02/17/2011) [-]
That's cool. I'm not iMagnet, that's just how I draw and my ratings really suffer because everyone thinks i'm him and thumbs me down for it or because I coincidently have the same drawing style as him. Feels bad man...
User avatar #61 to #61 - Nullifier (02/17/2011) [-]
Yeah, bet that sucks. It's mostly just the smug expressions that the characters occasionally make, like near your signature in that post, that people think looks like iMagnet. Not a bad comic itself...im actually storing good captchas for if i'm ever any good at making comics. I suck at drawing and **** .
