The way I see it, there are two things that drive change in this world, which are overwhelming violence and debate (the latter being an awful thing that I think should always be avoided, for the record). The entire idea of a protest is trying to draw some sick middle-ground between these two options. With overwhelming violence, the shock and awe will bring about change rapidly, but chances are that its for a bad reason. A good reason my be actually storming the damn white house and having the politicians do something about the problems with the people literally watching them. Debate on the other hand, is an orderly meeting of parties who hash out a resolution to a problem with a point - counterpoint discussion. This is the best way to solve problems in a good way.

Protesting takes the virtues of both and throws them both out the window. Protesters are people who are either partly or completely not committed to violence as a means to an end. At the same time, they are not open to reasonable debate and often claim during interviews that they are not there to hear anyone else's opinion. Sure, the event may have happened and the world may have seen that there's an interest in a topic, but protesters who expect a quick change are completely daft. It usually ends up being a bunch of people shouting at each other before they pack up and go home for the day.

This being said, protesting is not redundant. It has its uses in garnering attention about an issue. However, no protest is going to be the end-all for any world problem.

On a side note, as a Canadian I had to chuckle about your idea that there are countries who want to be all up in your shit. Sure there are some out there, but you guys spend so much on defense at the moment that you could fund enough machinery to overthrow most countries within a week. The UN and the partners who rely on your trade revenue would not stand idly by either. Americans used to not scare so easily.

yeah, cops do like to push that 'no loitering' rule around so they can be human bulldozers moving anyone from anywhere they dont want them to be

police by and large dont actually enforce laws they more enforce corporate policy (POLICe / POLICy) hence why they throw around that 'do you understand' line meaning like a contract 'do you agree to the terms and conditions"

User avatar #642 - hilariouswaste (12/04/2013) [-]
You'd really appreciate the pacifist stance of the police when there are hundreds of angry people shouting about something right outside your office/residence. A little thing called "mob mentality" is exactly why police show up. When people get in a large group and begin to shout about something that gets under their skin, there are some who will inevitably lose control. Without conscious thought they will become aggressive and possibly begin causing a public disturbance. If intimidation by a police force allows you no other option than to get violent, then you've got some behavioral disorders that need addressing. What pisses me off is that there hasn't been a well-known protest yet where the police were the only ones throwing punches (like with Ghandi). If not a single protester lifted a finger against the attack by police, we'd all be able to see how dumb it was. But fire will be met with fire, and trust me, the police burn much brighter than any protester.

I'd be rather pissed if my house got ransacked or spray-painted by some "viva la revolution" pisshead because the police decided to stay back on that one.

By the way, I am by no means claiming that police don't incite violence during some protests. There's tonnes of foul play on both sides. Any realist would look at a rally-turned-bad and simply leave. When a protest turns ugly for whatever reason, the police will regard anyone who even stays at the rally as a threat because the police must divide their attention to monitor them. Its a logical way of thinking when you're under extreme pressure. Those idiots who stand by and just watch the car burn at some riot are just as much at fault as the dudes with the gas and lighters since they're pressence puts the police under stress.

I'm just very upset with the way our country is going right now. To the point that I hold no respect for any form of government representation. The people are constantly being fucked, then having to pay for the fact that they got fucked. I truly wish that things would change peacefully. Though the way this world is going, the only thing I see going is the american people being pushed to the point of pushing back. I don't like the idea of another civil war, I just no that's the only way that the people can gain their power back.

With that said, I am also aware that if this country to turn to a civil war, it would be complete chaos and would not end well for the people. Too many other countries are waiting for the chance to slither into our borders and our government has too many weapons which could be used against us.

SO, I take that back, there is one other option I can see that will cause the U.S. citizens to regain power, though that won't happen. An invasion from another country would quickly cause nnearly everyone to drop the whole "Obama care is fucking us" and switch it to "Those commies are invading us!? not on my fucking watch."

Yeah some bad ass dude showed me it and I had to change my avatar to it.

I've been browsing FJ since before 06 when it was just a page with no more than 100 pictures and a few games. I left for a while and came back to see the place like this and continued to browse before making an account. Now that names have blue I regret waiting to make my account XD I want dark blue damn it.
User avatar #20 to #19 - davvi (07/17/2013) [-]
you won't have to wait that long for an unreadable blue though
also i think the games are still there but noone uses them
User avatar #21 to #20 - Nitsuin (07/17/2013) [-]
Yeah, that is true. I honestly couldn't tell you what any of the games were back then. I do remember one specific post that was on the page then. The "Insanity test" it was a picture of a guy in a formula one race car with looped audio of a high pitched impersonation of a car going through the gears. I believe the audio came from an annoying "song" that became a huge fad for about a year before dying. Oh man that shit made me laugh every time I clicked on it. It's the only thing I miss from back then.

Jesus I went on a rant there huh?
