It's related, but not it. You see, people are raised with societal influences, the ones that imply girls should be skinny are the same ones that imply guys should be stoic and unwavering. Toxic masculinity is a different societal influence that implies men should also be macho.

But anyways these things can be very bad. I actually have a psychological problem where I have great difficulty expressing a negative emotion because I don't want to look like a little bitch.
User avatar #60 - yoruwaakeru (14 hours ago) [-]
Not really, some people prefer to keep their composure. It has to do with how you were raised, typically wealthier/cultured families keep their composure and teach raise their children that way. Toxic masculinity would be something like a guy refusing to cry or show feminine emotions or anything that might show weakness for the sole reason of appearing manly. In my opinion it doesn't really matter, but some men feel like they're not allowed to express those emotions due to society/societal pressure. So they refuse to show them.
User avatar #57 - manofparody (15 hours ago) [-]
Yes and no.

To say Toxic Masculinity means that we're prone to rape and be very sexually aggressive, which is not what is shown in the picture and what we actually go through.
But it does imply that we've been shut out from showing our true emotions, because men are "supposed" to be these burly-lumberjack-no-emotion-showing creatures that we've been forced into.
#80 - Rascal (11 hours ago) [-]
toxic masculinity has nothing to do with being prone to rape, lol

I know we're all supposed to hate feminism and that's where you all learned the term from, but its a legitimate problem in our society

Maybe he just felt the need to be calm in front of his wife when he knew she'd be freakin out.
#81 - cookiedude (11 hours ago) [-]
It's not toxic. It's this man that grew up long enough ago, that he has had children of his own that are having children of their own.

The man comes from a different era and time where a man was a man, and that meant a man didn't show much emotion.
I know that my father was raised this way, and that, to a lesser extent, I was raised this way. I feel embarrassed showing much emotion other than laughing.
Even looking happy or sad is almost not possible with the men of my family, and I'm sure that this guy feels the same way.

"where a man was a man" masculinity
"I feel embarrassed showing much emotion" bad

the unly hungup you seem to have is that "toxic" is too dramatic of a word
User avatar #97 - hudis (9 hours ago) [-]
Not just men of different eras. I'm 21 and I'm the same way. Mostly because my father is the same and my mother is the complete opposite. It has less to do with how I was raised and more to do with what came to me naturally through how my father has been during my childhood and adolescence.

Only time he broke was at my grandmother's funeral. Seeing that broke me too.

How is that toxic?

Not wanting to show emotion is toxic? I have always been under the impression that not showing too much emotion is polite.
There is a difference between "feeling" an emotion and showing one. I feel happiness, sadness, joy, hatred, etc. But if I started showing every emotion I felt, it would be a really bad day. Not everyone needs to see me jump up and down emotional when I play a video game; that's how I feel when I play games.
#85 - Rascal (11 hours ago) [-]
you're hiding your emotions because you were raised that showing them is bad
#95 - Rascal (9 hours ago) [-]
I hate showing emotion because to me it loses meaning if I'm just a train of emotions all the time.
#86 - cookiedude (11 hours ago) [-]
Maybe so, but I also decide what emotions and how much I show. I feel that it would be wrong to show emotions sometimes. Not that I don't feel them, but I don't want to show them.

I also don't like it when people are so fucking happy or sad or shit when something little happens. To me it's a waste; like becoming desensitized to everything in the world.
Too much of the "Greatest thing Ever!" or "This is the Worst."
User avatar #98 - utburd (8 hours ago) [-]
I'd buy you some fucking shots for all of this, spot fucking on.
User avatar #55 - newtamalego (15 hours ago) [-]
It's maybe not that he didn't want to show happiness, but I'd be a little embarrassed to behave like that in front of others as well.

And it's not necessarily toxic that he didn't want people to see him like that.

Though, it looks like it was his wife, so idk.
#52 - Rascal (15 hours ago) [-]
Assuming this is real, a lot of men just don't show happiness due to how they grew up. You have to keep in mind some people grew up in a different era
User avatar #54 - MrMustacho (15 hours ago) [-]
