They didn't really explore this in the show, but in the prologue of Winds of Winter it shows what happens to wargs when their human bodies are killed - they warg into their animal. And Jon is known by the wildlings to be a powerful warg, even if he hasn't developed his powers. At the very least he'll come back in Ghost's body, but since Melisandre is at the Wall it's also quite likely that she'll revive him. Especially since she's starting to realize she was wrong about Stannis

Also, that particular part of the Season 5 finale actually happened in the books. In fact that's the very cliffhanger the Winds of Winter ended on, so it's not just for shock value.

>Not knowing GoT/ASoIF most popular and probably true fan theory

Fuck outta here

But at the end of the day, it is a story with a purpose.
There is a plan for the way things are moving, and there is the overarching theme of prophecy. The main point of the story is not shock value.

Nigga Jon Snow is Azor Ahai (Or Lightbringer). Hes more of the main character than Daenerys.

there's actually some neat reasons to kill him off. Put behind spoilers for anyone who wants to get pissy about being spoiled:
Once he is revived he will no longer be tied to the watch. The vow is till death, and if he isn't part of the watch he can do all kinds of neat shit. Additionally he'll probably be revived by melissandre, which should cause some interesting character interaction. In the book these two have interacted a lot more and I'm pretty excited to see how that situation develops.

He's going to be revived, GRRM has pretty much confirmed it multiple times
User avatar #12 - dellexe (07/22/2015) [-]
He's said somewhere that Jon Snow will have his true parentage told to him before he dies, so he's definitely coming back.

Hence my comment

But with everyone dying wouldn't it be even more surprising to bring them back. i get it now that mostly everyone thinks/knows that they are coming back so it isn't really a surprise as it was intended to be but ya have to gibe grrrrm some credit. the death would have actually forwarded the story as it would allow him to leave the nights watch and the actual act of his death/resurrection could point towards him being azor ahai
User avatar #9 - derivat (07/21/2015) [-]
Well, one of the main reasons ASoIaF/GoT is so popular is that even the greatest heroes who would never die in any other story can get killed off unexpectedly, so reviving one of the more mportant ones would kinda ruin the suspense.

Catelyn Stark was already revived in the books though.
User avatar #8 - derivat (07/21/2015) [-]
Yeah but Robb was the important death, Cat was just a bonus. Plus she doesn't do anything important as Stoneheart
#14 - anon (07/22/2015) [-]
I know but in my opinion it was the most unexpect and one of the best moments of the series, my brain just exploded.
Besides, the idea of a pissed off zombie Catelyn running around killing Freys, Lannisters and Boltons is just awesome.
