Wiki article inbound.
"The concept of the daisho originated with the pairing of a short sword with whatever long sword was being worn during a particular time period. It has been noted that the tachi would be paired with a tantō, and later the uchigatana would be paired with another shorter uchigatana. With the advent of the katana, the wakizashi eventually was chosen by samurai as the short sword over the tantō. Kanzan Satō in his book titled "The Japanese Sword" notes that there did not seem to be any particular need for the wakizashi and suggests that the wakizashi may have become more popular than the tantō due to the wakizashi being more suited for indoor fighting. He mentions the custom of leaving the katana at the door of a castle or palace when entering while continuing to wear the wakizashi inside.

According to most traditional kenjutsu schools, only one sword of the daisho would have been used in combat. However, in the first half of the 17th century, the famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi promoted the use of a one-handed grip, which allowed both swords to be used simultaneously. This technique, called nitōken, is a main element of the Niten Ichi-ryū style of swordsmanship that Musashi founded.

The wearing of daishō was limited to the samurai class after the sword hunt of Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1588, and became a symbol or badge of their rank.[10]Daishō may have become popular around the end of the Muromachi period (1336 to 1573)as several early examples date from the late sixteenth century. An edict in 1629 defining the duties of a samurai required the wearing of a daishō when on official duty. During the Meiji period an edict was passed in 1871 abolishing the requirement of the wearing of daishō by samurai, and in 1876 the wearing of swords in public by most of Japan's population was banned; this ended the use of the daishō as the symbol of the samurai, and the samurai class was abolished soon after the sword ban."

To the best of my knowledge, the only time dual wielding was ever done in the real world was when the second weapon was made for defensive purposes, like the probably gonna spell this wrong Main Gaushe, used by French Musketeers to parry the enemy's blade.

Plus, swords are heavy. Swinging around 2 full sized blades would be really tiring.
User avatar #28 - undeadmaus (04/15/2014) [-]
Kendo does not include two sword techniques. In fact, if you look at swordsmanship throughout history, there have never been techniques for wielding two swords of the same length. It's very impressive but not very practical. There have been however special shortswords made to be used in conjuction with actual swords, either to parry or strike an opponent when he is busy with your main sword.

In the case of samurais, they did carry two swords, their katana and their wakizashi. These swords were made together and were meant to be carried as a pair (daisho). They were mainly a symbol of status but were also useful in combat. Wakizashi however rarely saw action. If they did, it was usually by someone wielding one as his main weapon. In general fighting with two weapons is too hard to pull off in realistic situations.

What would be the point? Longer one has better for slashing, shorter would be for piercing and close range where full swings of longer wouldn't work.

User avatar #315 - dirtymoe (04/06/2014) [-]
well I take homeopathic drugs instead of normal and feel good. It helped me with serious shit in the past, that noone could help me with, without fucking up my liver...

Homeopathics are about as useful as Tylenol. Great for symptom treating. Terrible for actually fixing problems... It won't kill the cancer, but it'll help it hurt you less. For chronic pain it's fine, I just hate when people claim it to be a miracle cure for life threatening illnesses
User avatar #265 - MaxFabian (04/06/2014) [-]

I know what you mean. I tore my anterior talofibular ligament playing football in high school, grade 3 tear and i had to have it shut together. I couldn't walk since it was in my foot, and I don't know how I would of managed to pass freshman year without my friends and family. I know it costed a lot, and I was really grumpy, but they stuck with me the whole way. Nothing is better than that in my opinion.
