All things considered he was the hero, spoilers for game details.
-Developed a super weapon for destroying bandit camps from orbit
-Since he never hated Vault Hunters before they betrayed him, he never would have classified them as evil. If they hadn't fucked him, he would have helped them a lot with his super weapons. Probably made Pandora livable rather than the Mad Max shit it currently is.
-After Pre-Sequel he develops a hell-hole planet, storms a city inhabited by people who tried to kill him and makes science with slag.
-Only things Jack does that are objectively wrong are the slag experimentation on unwilling humans. His daughter was terrible and arguably the worst thing, but there is an ends justify the means argument in there if you want to argue he needed her to get to the warrior before the Vault Hunters. Not great but its there. (Not to mention Angel may or may not have killed his wife. So if that's the case he probably resents her to some degree.)

Jack is the hero because he develops and civilizes a planet that is a hell-hole. The player has no bigger ideas for the planet other than killing and looting, which from a gameplay perspective is fun, but is objectively wrong morally/from a story standpoint. He's a dick, but a dick that does a hell of a lot more than the players/friendly npcs.

He's a pretty complex character in his motivations so you have to have a certain level of maturity/intelligence to understand that he's ultimately the good guy in all of it. Which is why the cuckold who wrote the story sees him as a villain.

TL;DR: Handsome Jack did nothing wrong.

Huge spoilers for the story >>> The first two take place before 2, and in fact, the weapon was made right after 1.
He was experimenting with slag almost immediately after the Vault's opening, and you can see what can be considered the first E-Tech weapon in the Eye of Helios.
Jack knew New Haven was full of innocents, but regarded everyone on Pandora to be worthless bandits.
And he made his daughter become almost omnipresent before the storyline of the first game. The Eridium injectors were likely added just after TPS, but Angel was in "The Chair" unwillingly (Something about the chair scared angel almost as much as Jack's anger did) since she was a child.
His development involved strict laws and a VERY happy trigger finger. Anyone who went against him was tortured for hours, and then hopefully executed. He made the Vault Hunters open the Vault not to destroy the creature trapped within, but to make Eridium grow so he could climb the ranks of Hyperion. He wanted to control the Warrior not to defend Pandora, but to kill everyone already there. In Tales, it is revealed that he made many Endo-suits to control the battlefield with via inserting them into the bodies of friends and foes, dead or alive. Heroes at least value their friends.

TL;DR He had a few good points, but his God Complex motivates him to kill people and rule as a fascist dictator.

I squealed like a little girl when I heard the news... a white guy coming from an Asian inspired dimension who has strong ties to it and supersedes those boundaries is right up my alley... I'm primarily white (1/4 japanese,Italian, Spaniard and Dominican) and commute from nyc to japan (work in NYC and fiancee/home in japan) so I really relate to him
