I'm not taking sides here. My initial point was simply: There is a difference, therefore it's a bad argument to begin with.

It's not normally automatic, but people who have only seen this gun in warmovies and videogames wouldn't know.

Had he said: "The legal trouble to obtain an automatic rifle makes it impossible for a regular criminal to use, therefore it's stupid to ban just automatic rifles."

Which I guess wouldn't have had as a powerful delivery, but there's a faulty argument.

The AR-15 CAN'T be automatic. The argument is definitely still valid. Not sure why you keep saying "normally automatic" when its only settings are putting it on safety or putting it on semi.

Well yeah, but the m16 comes in varieties.

So it could just as well be automatic. And people want to ban automatic weapons.

Ban automatic weapons? You don't seem to understand just how HARD it is to get automatic weapons. It's so hard that effectively they are banned.
Nobody's going to go rob a store or anything with an automatic weapon, because in order to get it, they'd need to go through a whole lot of legal bullshit and pay a whole lot of money.

jesus christ what is wrong with you people
#311 - vanguard (12/16/2013) [-]
Yea that's right, how is it any different? lets take a look at how many people get killed in car accidents every year : about 30000 in 2010 compared to 10000 firearms deaths. which is more dangerous?
#427 - anon (12/16/2013) [-]
that is a fucking retarded comparison

most of those deaths are because of drinking
not to mention they HAVE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS

one is a weapons designed for killing things and the other is designed for transportation

were you serious in that comparison jeezus

Does that mean alcohol is as dangerous as guns? Alcohol is technically a poison, like tobacco or cyanide. That means that one of its functions is to kill people. Quick, lets ban alcohol to stop people from killing each other! Oh wait...last time caused the birth of organized crime in the US.

The truth is that guns (or any other tool that serves the same purpose) are not inherently dangerous. People don't get a sudden urge to kill people when they have a gun. If they did, you would have seen a massive hike in gun violence once most states re-legalized CCW permits. However, murder rates just continued to follow the same trend. Look at any dataset in the world for murder rates before/after weapons bans. Sure gun violence and stabbings might go down, but bludgeoning and strangulation goes up. The end result is that nothing has changed. Criminals will continue to source weapons after the ban and will just do their thing. In fact they now have an advantage because they are the only people with ranged weapons. The situation can be likened to the drug market : the people before the restrictions weren't all on crack, only the ones who wanted to be were and the ban didn't change a thing (you know, except for the billions of dollars wasted and ruinung a bunch of people's lives because they were caught with a joint once).
