Melanin protects the DNA of cells in the skin, without it the cells would either die or run a much higher risk of developing into cancer cells, so the more solar radiation you're exposed to, the more melanin is needed. Up in northern countries it's more or less unnecessary large parts of the year, and large amounts of melanin might actually put an individual at an evolutionary disadvantage.

Having skin that absorbs near the equator would intake too much sun (see skin cancer)
Having skin that reflects in the northern hemisphere you wouldn't get the amount of SUNNY D that you require. (I don't know much about this but I know when your bones don't properly absorb calcium (which requires the Sunny D to absorb properly) you can have bone issues and probably much worse conditions)
