how can a creature that size support itself. it would need to eat a LOT of whales.
User avatar #31 - gandalfthegreat (03/23/2013) [-]
Deep down in the ocean dude.. it could be eating other creatures its same size.. (not likely but you never know)
#33 - tranminh (03/23/2013) [-]
The other creatures the same size still need to be able to sustain itself...The blue whale eats 40 million krill a day, there's absolutely no way that there's a mysterious habitat of gigantic fish, maybe a new species of whale but even so that would be improbable

Collider sensors have been around since the first colliders in the 70s so we can see these collisions with relative ease. The problem is that there are so many collisions that we have to sort through each one to see if a Higgs Boson was produced. Basically the odds of a Higgs Boson produced in a collision is about a trillion to one, but so far the LHC has done about 100 trillion collisions. As the previous comment states it gets so much data from these collisions it would be impossible to store it long term so it relies first on a supercomputer to almost instantaneously throw out inconclusive data, but still leaving a lot to be sorted through manually by scientists. So the biggest thing isn't even producing the boson since probability states it will be produced, it's just showing it was produced and that means finding a collision where a particle resulting from a collision has more mass than the particles entering the collision, proving that a disruption in the Higgs field resulted a new boson. I could get into bosons and fermions, then quarks and gluons but there's a character limit. Yeah particle physics is pretty fucking awesome. Fucking Science Channel marathons.
#25 - roarflmao (03/21/2013) [-]
Indeed, the higgs hasnt been oberserved directly, it actually goes as far as that some outcomes of the particles it can decay into cannot be observed either.

What they look for are pattern, specific quanta of energy that matches that of the higgs, basically they know what they need to create it and they know the math behind how its created so when they do they runs they're checking if the number they're getting match up with the ones they've calculated

Are you a half-life fan? or did you just use the name because of the lambda itself?

I am both a half-life fan and a fan of the letter lambda.
User avatar #34 to #33 - toxicdisorder (09/06/2012) [-]
You sir, are ******* awesome. it's only on here that I find people with similar interests as me, but sadly I don't know much about the lambda itself, all I know is that it's used in math, and I think it's from the Greek (I don't really know for sure).
User avatar #35 to #34 - Lambda (09/06/2012) [-]
It's a greek letter, the scientific symbol for wavelength, and the designation of a secret lab devoted to teleportation research.
