The indentured servants thing is BS. Get your info from any black historian and they'll tell you that it's a way to downplay white slavery and make black slavery seem worse. Black historians will tell you that. White historians plagued with guilt and black "dindunuffins" will tell you otherwise because the history of slavery has to be blackwashed to make whites guilty and please black ignorance.

It's actually a lot more than that, but that's the simple way to put it yeah. It's more used to connect two nouns together. It's a possessive particle and is the difference between I name is and my name is. (watashi namae wa vs watashi no namae wa) But it's usage is rather wide. But the more correct, simple way, is it's a possessive particle. it makes X own Y.

Banks don't actually take your collateral into their possession until you default on your loan. By then, interest rates and mised payments fees would be costing you hundreds and it would take about 4-6 months of missed payments for the banks to reclaim collateral.
So short answer, no, it wouldn't. If every person getting a loan had to park their car with the bank after getting a loan, nobody would put their car as collateral.
