If you meet a Kevin in Germany you can automatically assume that he is an underachiever and recieved no love or education from his parents.

Can vouch for newdevyx's video.
The guy that makes these videos does a DAMN good job of including all the relevant info and cutting out all the unnecessary shit.
Definitely recommend watching through it all.

It's mostly as astatine said, but the real reason I think he's a really cool villain is because he slowly falls. At first he's a righteous paladin, but starts doing worse and worse things to save his country before in the end he goes completely evil. The turning point is probably when he decides to purge the entire city of Stratholm with plenty of living humans just so the plague that had infested the city wouldn't spread to the rest of his country. The other paladins and the woman he loved stood back and said they wouldn't help him.

The Story of The Lich King Full Version Lore Here is his full story. It's a really long one, but told by one of the best lore tellers of Wow community.
#20 - astatine (02/28/2016) [-]
That's Arthas. He was a benevolent prince and general cool guy - knew his servants and guards by name, didn't care about rank, and eventually he became a Paladin. Then one day undead armies started attacking and his people were being slaughtered and raised as enemies left right and centre, and the stress started getting to him - he became irritable and reckless.

He heard about a legendary sword in the far north which might be able to help and went on a big journey to find it. That sword just so happened to be Frostmourne, the weapon of the guy responsible for the undead attacks in the first place; the Lich King. The sword - and the journey up to this point - corrupted him, which leads to this

After this he has another journey to find the Lich King, can't quite remember why, but along the way he becomes outright evil and eventually murders the Lich King - who was a really nice guy to Arthas by the way - and steals his power, becoming the new Lich King.

It's all in Warcraft 3 but there's also a book about it which is really good, Rise of the Lich King. Back when Arthas was a good guy he had a horse which he'd raised since it was a foal, and there's this utterly heartbreaking moment where it breaks its leg miles away from the nearest stable in the middle of winter because Arthas pushed it too hard and he's forced to kill it to end its suffering

I believe when he becomes the lich king he does find it again and raise it as his undead steed. Which was nice.

Yeah, in the plague lands you can even find it's empty grave. He raised it upon his return to Lordaeron when he had become a Death Knight in service of the lich king

Also makes for a great song Arthas Invincible HD

To follow up on that, here is a very good video about the story of arthas, for those interested in possibly the best story to come out of warcraft

Actually by stabbing ice crown Arthas freed the Lich King from his prison and by putting on the helmet he merged their souls and had his mind slowly consumed by the Lich King.
#23 - astatine (02/28/2016) [-]
This may be noncanon then, but in the book Arthas betrays and kills the Lich King after putting the helmet on when the Lich King tries to merge them both

That's weird. In the game it always looked and felt more like it was part of the Lich Kings Plan. It's even Nur'Zhul who says "Now... We are one" Warcraft 3 Cinematic The Frozen Throne Ending The Ascension
#35 - astatine (02/28/2016) [-]
It kind of fits both ways, Arthas killing the Lich King takes place in a kind of mental room in the book. Arthas puts the helmet on, the "we are one" thing happens, and then Arthas mentally offs the old Lich King.

Like I said though it's probably noncanon, if you're curious though the book's by Christie Golden

In legion we're actually going to fight the spirits of Ner'zhul and Arthas. Also, his dead horse was later resurrected by him and became invincible.

makes no sense then that Arthas is accually controlling the scorge to not simply overrun azzeroth(Uthers Quote)

The Lich King's psyche was 3 separate fragments for a long time.
Ner'zhul, Arthas, and Mathias Lehner (the embodiment of Arthas' lost humanity)
While Arthas fused with the Lich King, he didn't lose all of himself, even though he had been a death knight for a long while.
In some small recess of his mind, he still cared about certain people of the world, and the death knight side of him rationalized it with a plan to draw in Azeroth's greatest heroes and resurrect them for the scourge.
Arthas essentially reigned in the Scourge, who without him, would mindlessly expand outward until they conquered everything.

I dunno, in all the lore pieces I've read it always said when Arthas sat on the throne he mentally overpowered Ner'Zhul and thus became the new Lich King so I think it is canon
