Yes, and bring them into line with every other non-profit. You don't think it's a little suspect that the IRS automatically waves the audit requirement for churches but not, say, the american red cross? So, in reality, nobody actually knows where church money goes because nobody checks. Plus "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Except when it has to decide whether something is a legitimate religion or not for tax purposes, and having government employees deciding the legitimacy of a religion sounds a little unconstitutional wouldn't you agree?
There's no reason a church should run community programs and not the state, if they're so valuable anyway, I'm surprised the church doesn't just give all of its money to the state anyway...

I have been involved in a lot of churches throughout my youth and their programs are much more effective than anything I have seen from the state. My dad lost his job to MS and the state requires anyone who goes out on disability to survive. on average, 6 months of no pay. My parents lost their house because of it. That money is much better off in the hands of my local church where the pastor rents out a truck every month and drives in the city making sandwiches than in the states hands.

Yup, all that money goes back into the community. None of it is ever wasted on needlessly extravagant facilities, right? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megachurch

Reading sure is hard. Also pointing out one of the handful of mega churches is a pretty illogical way to argue in comparison to literally thousands of smaller churches for each large on. Also what organization doesn't build a larger building for a larger group? You want it to be a rickety barn the saize of a football stadium and half assed rafters for them to stand on? Obviously there will be some corruption anywhere money and power are available. Nobody defends Benny Hinn (example of a corrupt leader) but instantly assuming all large churches are corrupt or that all churches misuse funds because of a couple examples is an argument that wouldn't pass for high school debate, let alone any adult conversation.

I support religion, I really do, but I feel like it should be a private part of your life, shared with your family and a group of close-knit like-minded individuals. In my ideal world, churches wouldn't really be a thing, except for small community churches that seat at most 50-100 people, and most people would meet once or twice a week with friends and family that share their religion at someone's house, and discuss their religious books and holy teachings over dinner or in the drawing room afterwards. People that wanted to dedicate themselves to the religion like current pastors and priests would host these gatherings, and invite people to them. The money that goes into building these extravagant churches would be used to print freely available religious texts, and all of the rest would go to charity programs. There are 4 churches I see in my area regularly that are all roughly half the size of the local mall. Three of them have giant electronic billboards out front displaying the pastor's names, their worship schedule, and usually a couple other things. That just reeks of corruption to me. I've seen a ton more of it driving around the state. I abhor corruption of anything pure, religion just happened to be the topic at hand in this thread.

The only time anyone at a church makes any money is when they have a full time pastor and that is their job.
#8 - BoSvNCR (07/04/2015) [-]
Pastors that work at Non denominational churches make shit tons of money because they set their own salaries. It's pretty fucked up, my neighbor was one of them.
User avatar #14 - themaaster (07/05/2015) [-]
Our paster made about as much as any middle class person did. Judging by the cars he's driven over the years. (volkswagon bug, then a camaro)

User avatar #9 - hwangw (07/04/2015) [-]
Nah, at most churches their is a board that decides salaries to avoid just that kind of thing and in bigger churches an entire finance department.
#11 - BoSvNCR (07/04/2015) [-]
I'm just saying there are non denominational churches without a board of elders to set the pastor or priests salary. So they set their own.
