Eh, I didn't really care for it that much. Maybe it was because my teacher tried to force feed us all the symbolism in it. Yeah yeah, green is the american dream and the broken clocks means he hasn't moved on, blah, blah. Overall, it seemed to me like a dude who refused to move on with his life after losing the dumb chick who married some prick and then ended up dying for it.
Ironically, she tried to portray Gatsby as the great hero of the story who met a tragic and horrible end, and she portrayed Nick as a bad guy of sorts. I actually liked Nick out of everybody because he actually seemed like he actually understood what was going on and how to handle the situation properly. How the hell was he suppose to know that Gatsby would get gunned down?

Look, if you phrase it like that, literally everything could be boiled down to the ordinary.
Gatsby's situation, persona, and actions, were anything but ordinary. I wouldn't call them pathetic either. Someone pathetic deserves pity, but I don't pity Gatsby, nobody should pity Gatsby. He did something almost superhuman to get to that point. Nevermind that we should also remember Tom cheated on her, but either way, the story made a very clear point: sometimes, it isn't passion and desire that wins. The world isn't so glossed and pretty as you might think. Sometimes, even the hero, in his pursuit of something we hold as a virtue, must sully himself, and even then, he isn't always right to do so. I mean, this book presented some very interesting content. Not to mention Owl Eyes AKA the Billboard AKA God, which I thought was interesting.
Also, since when were we supposed to think Nick as a bad guy? Since when were there any "bad guys" in this novel? The only person that can be called objectively bad is Gatsby because of how he got his money (but lets be real, that was hardly a real crime), and perhaps Tom because of his racism/adultery (which makes him an asshole, not evil). Definitely not Nick, who, while perhaps jaded, is still just human.

I agree, I don't think Nick was a bad guy. I'm just telling you what my teacher told me.
Don't get me wrong, I understand that there is a deeper message here, I just was turned off by it because of how it was presented. Maybe if I read it on my own and able to make my own judgments, I may have a different opinion altogether.

Well, I was the type of person that either read the entire book before my teacher had the chance to go over it, and my teacher was cool, so.
Admittedly my teacher was a little more than cool. No specific homework assignments like, "write an essay on why Nick is a bad guy" or some shit. He always pointed out what he saw, then he made a statement like "well, ___ is a ___ guy, right? or?", and then asked the whole class what we thought, and there were often dissenting opinions, which he sometimes said "ehh..." but other times "okay" or "yeah, I could see that, definitely", so. Our quizzes were based on purely factual evidence: "how did __ react to ___" or "who shows up to Gatsby's funeral", etc., and our essays were literally "prove anything you want. Anything that you feel you've observed that you feel you have the power to prove and can do so in at least 2 pages of writing", so.

Indeed. I genuinely regret not reading the book when it was assigned as summer work, then waiting for it to be borderline ruined by a lot of the analysis. I usually love analysing literature - but TGG is one of the only books that I would have preferred without the analysis. It's been one of my favourite books since grade 11.
