Completely agree, though I have to say, these new pronouns people are trying to push are a disgrace to the English language. It'd be far more practical to simply accept "they" and its forms as a gender neutral singular pronoun.

I generally do use they, but if somebody I was already on good terms with asked me to call them by a different pronoun, I'd happily respect that. If they yelled "IM NOT PART OF YOUR BINARY GENDER DICHOTOMY, I AM XIR", then i'd give them shit for it. Hell, i'd call somebody stormageddonthedoombringer as the pronoun if they asked me nicely

"As opponents of formal grammar delight to point out, English has not remained exactly the same during the last several hundred years. Only dead languages, such as Greek and Latin, can do that. Anything alive must grow and change. Language is no exception.
What the same opponents are slower to point out, however, is that the changes during the period have been remarkably small... The total loss of any kind, in both grammar and vocabulary, is minuscule in the context of the English vocabulary as a whole. What has change significantly has been by way of additions, which of course would not affect our ability to understand our ancestors but only, hypothetically, their ability to understand us.
Moreover, up until around the early 1960s, almost all changes of any kind that did take place over the years were for the better, with new words enriching our language... tending in the direction of greater precision and clarity."
- N.M Gwynn - Gwynn's Grammar (2013)

The argument about language changing is grossly misinformed. It can't be used as an excuse to debase language. The joy of English is that it does change, slightly, but always for the better.
Slang, however, does change extremely quickly and when it comes to the terminology, this is what we're talking about. Those words are still medical terms but all used as slang, predominantly to mean "you're a dickhead" or "you're weird". It has nothing to do with language evolving... it's just slang changing.

If people are using the fact that they are neat or anal as an excuse to gain sympathy then I can see the frustration that OP faces. Otherwise it's all just a question of usage and people should stop getting their knickers in a twist about it._ _____
