Real question: If the Universe is expanding and it's also a closed system, what is it expanding into? If it's something, why doesn't that count as the Universe? If it's not, then what exactly is going on? Actually, in general would work too.
User avatar #65 - theist (12/21/2013) [-]
Space is infinite but contains a finite amount of matter and energy. The matter and energy is expanding outward, but space isn't.

That's my thought on it anyway. I'm by no means an expert, so don't quote me.
User avatar #66 - theist (12/21/2013) [-]
It's also quite possible that our entire universe is just a small fragment of a cell or atom that is contained inside another being or physical remnant of a much larger universe. We have microscopes these days that see astronomically small particles, and if we keep zooming in we keep seeing "stuff". So expanding outward we might see the same phenomenon, but our technology isn't that advanced yet. Our universe's entire existence could be a fragment of a millisecond to that larger "being", and vice versa for the atoms and cells that live in us.
User avatar #52 - Haruhi (12/21/2013) [-]

I would much rather believe that, and I hope that in my lifetime there will be the technology to copy my neurons onto transistors, and become cyberized.

Welp, in addition to your theory maybe it's also the economic side? I don't claim to know much, but the economic effect of 9/11 was pretty severe. I personally don't know of many extraordinarily important places that trains can get to. Now, cars can get to many places, but also consider that a plain can hit and building, no matter where it is (unless it's underwater...and I don't really think there's any important buildings underwater).

You might also notice that the other "American armor" is a Panther and a King Tiger.
User avatar #111 - zomaru (12/18/2013) [-]
Funny you say that,
Is the lower plate exposed and weak as all hell?
If yes, then Panzer is German, If no, Then is ever other smart country.... But france, because no armor doesn't count
User avatar #113 - traelos (12/18/2013) [-]
>Weak armor
>German

Pick one.

Even the lower glacis of most german tanks had more armor than any part of most allied tanks of the time.
User avatar #122 - zomaru (12/18/2013) [-]
They were penetrated by the allies quite often, at least, compared to the rest of their Hulls? Shells? Armor? sure, armor works.
User avatar #127 - traelos (12/18/2013) [-]
Quite often is a strong term.

More often than the rest of it maybe.
User avatar #129 - zomaru (12/18/2013) [-]
Plus, The Germans thought using the extra tracks in the right placement would act as thicker armor... So they basically Told the allies where to aim...
User avatar #130 - traelos (12/18/2013) [-]
That practice actually started among American Sherman drivers.
User avatar #131 - zomaru (12/18/2013) [-]
Alright, so everyone did it.
Doesn't mean it worked.
User avatar #132 - traelos (12/18/2013) [-]
It helped.

It was basically a jerry-rigged (haha) version of skirts.
User avatar #133 - zomaru (12/18/2013) [-]
I don't think It ever saved any ones life... If anything, all it did was act as a target and lose them their backup tracks.
User avatar #136 - traelos (12/18/2013) [-]
You'd be surprised.

A lot of it has to do with how the shells worked. When they hit a target the pressure would activate certain mechanisms to help pierce armor, when they hit skirts or treads they would activate early and lose their effectiveness.

Also don't underestimate what an extra inch of steel plate could do.
User avatar #138 - zomaru (12/18/2013) [-]
I guess you're right, more effective to aim for places like exposed tracks and viewpoints any way.
User avatar #91 - Haruhi (12/18/2013) [-]

True, true all around. At some point I think our ideas agree in the fact that nobody will decide, based on a whim, that they want to do something like this at an airport. I am also agreeing that if someone wants to do something bad enough, then of course they could likely manage to do it.

Indeed it's a show, but sometimes it's the illusion that discourages people.
On a completely theoretical level, if every single person carried what looked exactly like a gun, but you could not tell if it was real until it is fired at you, would you rob/try to rob a store full of people with those possibly real guns? Or if you want to argue perception, would you rob/try to rob a store full of real guns that might not all fire? In the end, the image is what counts.

In short (TL;DR), it's all about looking paranoid/thorough in order to deter the very thought of trouble.
User avatar #161 - Haruhi (12/18/2013) [-]
If people want to do something bad they will find a way to do it. The reason why it hasn't happened again is because a) our intelligence services prevent them during the planning stage, and b) they just don't want to or dont have the resources. I mean, you could theoretically have a bunch of sleepers working in airports waiting for the green light to cause serious mayhem. That's potentially already in place.
#201 - wellhungmonkey (12/19/2013) [-]
