ask skyrim about it
if you didn't play skyrim, basically you fight dragons a lot and there's one really evil dragon and at the end you kill him. the fight is EXACTLY like every other dragon fight.

can't they get to a higher level?

that spread of shinies has gone down now. They can be worse because most find them randomly but while breeding for perfect ivs you may get a shiny considering the hours it takes to do it.

I'm gonna go ahead and butt in here

All pokemon have a hidden number assigned to them that have nothing to do with IVs. It's entirely possible to have a shiny pokemon with perfect IVs.

Although IVs did determine if a pokemon was shiny in generation I and possibly II.

The chances of finding a shiny Pokemon is normally 1 in 8192. That's a 0.0122% chance of finding one. The exact probability of encountering a shiny Pokemon is calculated as follows. The game generates four random numbers ranging from 0 to 65535. These are represented as binary numbers, 16 bits in length. The bitwise operation "exclusive or" is performed on each of the numbers, resulting in a single binary number in the range 0 to 65535. If this number is less than 8, the Pokemon is shiny. Hence the probability of this occuring is 8/65536 or 1/8192.
Also if you use a pokeradar, you can increase your chances of getting a shiny to about 1/200 if you get a chain of 40. Chaining pokemon is a bit difficult, but doable.

I know IV's determined them in II, but I hadn't realized they changed the mechanics in the later games. I appreciate that you were able to fill in the vague-ness of my comment, hey.

Also I learned something new.

Actully there were shinys in gen 1 but they didnt look any different they would sort of glisten with star or something when they were found. I found a shiny ryhorn on pokemon red whe i was like 9 and killed it thinking it gave me more exp or something

Oh right. Thanks.

I never fully played through generations 1 and 2, I always thought the deeper complexity of the remakes were better.

Pretty much everyone I know has or has seen a shiny in X and Y
User avatar
#187 - toensix (10/23/2013) [-]
It's still uncommon and don't forget it was a starter. You can't catch a Mudkip in X or Y so a shiny Mudkip is still rare.
#14 - akselrk (10/22/2013) [-]
Is the shiny better in any way ? Or are they just rare ?
User avatar
#244 - lolollo (10/23/2013) [-]
It's the rarity. I'd say it makes no sense, but just think about it. Each random encounter you make has a 1/8000 chance of being shiny. As in each encounter you make rolls a d8000 and only when you get a natural 8000 does a shiny show up. It'll make you go "holy shit" no matter how "bound to reality" you think you are.

They actually are not better (some can argue they are worse as they have to have specific IV's, which can be lower than normal)

You have roughly 1/8000-ish chance of finding one
