Don't allocate more RAM for it unless you're actually using an insane texture pack like a 512x; it would actually slow it down. If you're just playing it with or without the mods, it's fine as is, but if you're using an HD texture pack then... well you get what I'm saying.
Also, I recommend installing Optifine. Not even for the mods or texture pack (though you need either that or MCPatcher to use an HD texture pack), but just install it anyways. If you were getting low FPS it should help, though if you have specs like mine then I don't think there's much need for it.

My laptop actually has a quad core i7 (2.4GHz turbo boost to 3.4), a 2GB 630M Nvidia GPU, and 8GB RAM.

I could only run the shaders mod with the window minimized.

At the same time, I only ran Minecraft with 512MB RAM. You think if I increased the RAM to about 4GB, it would run alright?

It couldn't hurt. Does it ever crash and say something about memory loss? Because that's when you need to allocate more, otherwise it should be fine.
Also, if you're running 64-bit WIndows, make sure you have the latest 64-bit Java installed.

Indeed I do have 64 bit Java (I bought the laptop about 2 weeks ago) and the only time it crashed for memory loss was when I tried the 512 x 512 Redcraft texture pack (without the shaders mod)

If it's because of the texture pack, then yes, you have to allocate more. Even the creator of the pack said the default amount of RAM wouldn't be enough. If you have 8 GB of RAM, then try using all of it. Well, maybe not all of it, but most.

My laptop usually idles with about 6700MB of RAM free. I don't know what the hell uses the other 1300.

Windows.
Microsoft intentionally makes the OS use up RAM, but you can circumvent this by deleting system32.

But no really, it actually is Windows that uses that and you can't do anything about it.

I thought Windows 8 was supposed to be less resource hungry.

I think it is. I run WIndows 7 and I currently have ~3 GB used with just Skype and 6 tabs of Chrome open. I don't think that would use much, but yeah.

On my crappy desktop, I have Windows 7 running with 4 tabs on Chrome, only using up 1.5GB.

Looking at the Task Manager, I can see Steam, Dropbox, Rainmeter and Chrome use up quite a bit of RAM...
So it just depends on what you have running in the background.

Yeah, I never have Steam running in the back. I might move to Firefox. Maybe not as fast as Chrome, but less resource hungry as far as I know.

Then again, my desktop is a 5 year old HP a6000 with 4GB DDR2 1066MHz RAM. And a horrible AMD processor.

A decent processor (3.0 GHz-ish is good, mine's 3.4), a good video card that you're able to run Skyrim on (mine's an AMD Radeon HD 6750 and I get about 20-30 FPS on max settings without being near a town (I have ~70 graphical mods, many of which enhance towns and villages so they're huge killers of my FPS)), and RAM. LOTS of RAM. I have 8 GB and I have to allow Minecraft to use all of it to run those mods and even that's not enough and it sometimes crashes by running out of memory. The big killer is the texture pack, not the mods. At 512x and with how inefficient Minecraft generally is, it's like a giant power-hungry beast. With just the mods I only get about a 25% drop in FPS, which, considering 60 FPS is perfectly smooth, means nothing. There are the occasional lag spikes, though.

With all of this, I average 400-500 FPS on Far distance/Fancy graphics and whatever, but with the mods it dropped down to about 60-100 or somewhere around there.

I guess I'll give it a try, letting minecraft use all of my RAM of course
