some people here have it where the hot water is heated as its used but i think most of us have a hot water heater that holds a certain amount of water. i think i have a 20 gallon. the furnace doesn't hold much so when were running the hot water off of it we run out constantly. unless we turn the furnace on before showering.

Well sometimes, depending on the money situation, people will buy a cheaper water heater that isn't adequate enough to keep up with the people using water. Also sometimes (at least in my house) in the winter we will shut off the hot water heater and hook the hot water to the boiler for the oil heater. most of the time if the heater is off the water will not heat and we run out. easily fixed by turning on the heater a few mins before getting in the shower

So to get hot water you actually have to build up a reserve? Because our heater just warms up the water as it's used, if we turn on any hot tap the boiler just starts up and it takes a couple of second to get hot water.
