It carries no possibility of life. A sperm cannot become a baby. If it becomes a zygote it has the possibility of life.
User avatar #220 - Deeticky (03/08/2014) [-]
Though an individual sperm cannot become a baby on its own, that does not eliminate the possibility of that sperm becoming a baby through the fertilization of an egg. Therefore, each sperm carries the possibility of life. Remember, we're using the word possibility here, which means that even a tiny, tiny, tiny chance still counts.
User avatar #218 - fnoogernooger (03/08/2014) [-]
I think Deeticky is saying that all sperm have the possibility of forming zygotes, which in turn have the possibility of creating life.
User avatar #228 - teoberry (03/08/2014) [-]
The sperm does not have the possibility. The eggs + sperm do. Deeticky said when he beats it he's killion millions of potential kids when that isn't true, because THE SPERM BY ITSELF CANNOT MAKE BABBY.
User avatar #233 - fnoogernooger (03/08/2014) [-]
Okay, I get your point. Deeticky gets your point. You don't get our point. Let me see if an analogy will help you:

I have a dollar. I want to buy a soda from the soda machine. I have the possibility of getting a soda if I give the machine my dollar. Now let's extrapolate. Let's say I have a million dollars. If I wanted to, I have the possibility of buying a million sodas from the machine. There is part of possibility in the parts which produce the product. The money holds part, and the machine. Both have full, but also both have part. I could use the money eleswhere, or I could use it here.
User avatar #236 - teoberry (03/08/2014) [-]
You are correct. But saying a sperm is a possible baby is a stretch
User avatar #242 - fnoogernooger (03/08/2014) [-]
Not so much. If he were feeling so inclined, he could go to a sperm bank and ensure that all of his sperm would result in babies. Each sperm carries the possibility of producing offspring. It's like throwing a box of loaded, primed guns out of an airplane window. Once it hits the ground, you can be sure some will discharge, but it is equally likely that they will not discharge. Until they reach the point of actual event-hood, they all exist in a state where both events happen. Okay, it's time to stop posting; I'm getting into quantum, Schrodinger territory.
User avatar #393 - teoberry (03/08/2014) [-]
The airplane example does not work. Sperm by itself would be the regular bullet, and egg might be the firing pin. Neither will do anything without the other
User avatar #442 - fnoogernooger (03/08/2014) [-]
Okay, since a sperm by itself has no possibility of life, why does a zygote have a possibility of life?

By itself under normal conditions, the zygote will immediately die if there is no external nutrients to supply it (e.g. it is exposed to air for long periods of time, it is inside the womb of a deceased individual, etc.). Since it relies on something else (i.e. a test tube or womb), it has no potential for life on itself.

Please, tell me how I'm wrong because this is how I see your argument.
User avatar #443 - teoberry (03/08/2014) [-]
Because the zygote is already in development. 'Normal conditions' in this case means the womb, so unless something else goes wrong it will become a baby
User avatar #444 - fnoogernooger (03/08/2014) [-]
But it depends on the womb to nurture it, so by itself, it will not be able to produce life. It will grow and attach itself to the uterus.
User avatar #445 - teoberry (03/08/2014) [-]
You said 'normal conditions'. Being outside the body is not a normal condition for a zygote
#446 - fnoogernooger (03/08/2014) [-]
You're nit picking small details and ignoring the point I am making. I'm ashamed it took me this long to realize I've been trolled. 10/10, sir.
User avatar #447 - teoberry (03/08/2014) [-]
I'm not trolling tho. Those small details fuck up your argument. You said a zygote under normal conditions would die but that's wrong because under normal conditions a zygote is alive and in the mother.

No, you are not. Sperm by itself has 0 chance to become babby. A sperm and an egg do.
User avatar #266 - Crusader (03/08/2014) [-]
Not true, you could use it to clone someone.
User avatar #214 - Deeticky (03/08/2014) [-]
But each sperm carries the possibility of life. Just because a sperm isn't a baby on its own does not make it any less of a "possible baby". Yeah, it needs to fertilize an egg, but it is still a "possible life".

Fair enough. But people being afraid of planes is a serious concern, regardless of the actual safety of planes. Maybe we could re-purpose the baby sleep gas to knock out non-first class passengers. Won't have to worry about health concerns - it was safe enough for babies.

I didn't think it through at all. I made it up as I was typing.

But I just think there should me SOME safety measures on airplanes. Sure, shit doesn't go wrong very often, but when a plane does crash, it has the potential for a whole lot of casualties. Plus, it's good for morale. The safety pamphlets and oxygen were good for that purpose until Fight Club ruined that.
User avatar #118 - Deeticky (02/26/2014) [-]
I hear ya, man. I used to be phobic of planes. The truth is that most plane crashes are survivable, and over 95% of people who get into a plane crash survive. There are a lot of safety features and they do serve a purpose. Also, as you know, the vast, vast, vast, majority of planes never crash, and I think a lot of people would feel pretty uncomfortable knowing that their seat could drop out at any second.

How about just a special compartment for babies? You put all the babies in the box when getting on the plane, they pump some sleep gas in, and in case of an emergency the baby box has a parachute and GPS thing.
User avatar #137 - Crusader (02/26/2014) [-]
I swear, I was picturing shoving a baby into the overheard compartments and then launching them out Red Alert style.
User avatar #114 - Deeticky (02/26/2014) [-]
Well, I'll give you credit for having thought this through quite a bit.

Why do you think that this would be worth implementing given that airplane-related deaths are so low?
