I'm not 100% on how the capacitor works but you may be right on this one, then again he may simply be trolling. No one can be sure.

While you are correct about the potential of this system to possibly store energy, there are several distinct and fatal flaws. First the amount of energy that the current would loose as it pushes through the cords would be atrocious. Also, this is not a capacitor. Capacitors are smaller, an work on a disk based system where two conductive disks are insulated with a semi-conductive material sandwiched between them. When the power stored in one of the plates becomes powerful enough, the energy arches across the semi-conductor and completes the circuit, resulting in a discharge of a higher amperage than the initial current.
Also, capacitors are NOT batteries. They charge, and then expel all of their charge at once, and then must be recharged.
Finally, energy cannot be created or destroyed, only change forms. Thus the amount of energy consumed by the devices must equal the energy initially put into the system. The sparker used in the clip is called a quartz sparker, and uses a small spring loaded hammer (the thing that you push down and goes pop!) to strike a disk of quarts with such force that it exhibits piezoelectric properties (meaning that it translates vibrative forces into electrical current.) When pressed by a human finger, these generate around 4.16 volts, which is far below the standard 120 volts that most electrical appliances run at.
So in conclusion: The apparatus could theoretically work to store energy for a finite time, but could never create the results shown given the shown parameters.

Physics M.S. fag, reporting in.

Having a wire (not an insulated cord) rolled up circularly is a coil, which at best, can generate an induced current if subjected to a magnetic field, either permanent or adjustable. Having an INSULATED cord rolled up doesn't act like a capacitor, as the dialectric constant between what you're defining to be the "parallel plates" is so large that the charge could never move. Additionally, capacitors store charge, not Electric Field; any Field quantity is just an abstract visualization of how charge behaves. It can't be stored, in the same way you can't have a "flux capacitor", you can't have a "field capacitor" either.

That being said, this video is definitely a troll. Funny though :P
