what i meant is that there are bacteria that produce organic compounds without sunlight like plants, chemosynthesis instead of photosynthesis, basically what latentvirtue said, and it's pretty rare and interesting to find an ecosystem that works without sunlight and is so big

the interesting part is what does the lowest one on the food chain eats

Well, just like in most parts of the world, the plants usually get nutrients from the soil and water?

What I want to know is how 15 species lived down there for 5 millions years and also exist in the outside world just the same.

How does THAT work?

I wonder just how "isolated" the cave was? They make it sound like it was an air-tight, sealed pocket of stuff living down there. But there was a water flow. So it obviously was not THAT isolated...

its some anaerobic bacteria (gets energy from decomposing CO2, like plants, but instead of light (photosynthesis) it uses a chemical reaction (sulphuric, i believe) chemosynthesis, and some more microorganisms that metabolize methane.

They form a paper-like foam on the surface of the water (which comes from below the cave, cave is essentially flooded). Such lifeforms are autotrophs, and they are the plant equivalent of that ecosystem. The lowest member of the food chain (in this case, herbivore equivalent) are the creepy crawlies that feed off the above-mentioned foam.

The only part that is unclear to me is that there is a first observed, unique type of leech there. What does it leech off of, if there are only arthropods down in that cave?

i know, i read about that cave and dabbed in biology, just saying for coletheuber
also, leeches don't really survive off blood, they can also swallow whole small creepy crawlies

They're probably scavengers, and eat leftovers or the dead of the other species.
