that it should be the ease with which a planet could be rendered uninhabitable from orbit is extreme makes it a terrifying tactic and costly considering the victor might want to use that planet afterwards.

Like sirpoopcloud said, there's far more to it than that. The Nova bomb detonating taking a major chunk out of the elite's fleet, the other city-like vessel that the Spartans and vice-admiral Whitecomb take out along with several hundred vessels.

In ground combat the UNSC had the advantage. However, the Covenant swooped in, destroyed any orbital defences, and then proceeded to glass the planet, unless there were Forerunner relics present (like on Reach and Earth). But then they just send in so many troops that the humans would always end up being overrun.

Also, another reason for their so called 'incompetence' is that they imitate, but don't evolve their technologies. While humans are constantly updating their fleets with anything that they can improve, the Covenant merely imitate. Even though significantly superior in terms of technology, it was shown that during the capture of a flagship by the survivors of the first HALO-ring encounter that there was room for much improvement. Cortana managed to make their plasma weapons far more effective, and managed to improve their jump system tremendously. Something the Covenant should have been able to notice on their own (they have their own ship-AI's, though inferior compared to the human AI's), but simply never thought of.

Afterwards, when the Hugarok (or engineers) disappeared, and the Covenant shattered, the Elites suddenly find themselves being unable to do anything but be a warring class, and struggle to pick up even basic farming.

There's far more to it than just the games series. I'm only through a handful of books, but I'm already taken aback by the sheer amount of background information they reveal. And they're good reads, too.

Yeah, Halo's pretty much my favorite franchise, but I've only see through the games and tidbits here and there, mostly because I've never once seen an announcement for a Halo book, and it was a while before I even knew there were any. I have little to no acess to the books, knowledge of how many books there are, movies, comics, my only hope is the Halo WIKI, but even that tends to be sparring of detail.
User avatar #25 - sirpoopcloud (05/30/2014) [-]
well the UNSC according to the books had some major advantages in ground warfare and were able to win a decent amount of ground victories during the course of the war, problem is ground victories don't mean jack shit if the orbital defenses don't hold cause the planet will just get glassed anyway.

To quote HowStuffWorks:

" Voltage is measured in Volts, current is measured in Amps and resistance is measured in Ohms.
An analogy to help understand these terms is a system of plumbing pipes.
The voltage is equivalent to the water pressure, the current is equivalent to the flow rate, and the resistance is the pipe size."

So, Higher Voltage, more pressure, comes out faster.
Amperage is the amount of water traveling.
And resistance is the diameter of the pipe, more resistance = less flow.

That's all I got. Science.
