yeah , no , you wish.
they declared independence without any assurance of support from outside , Washington just launched the attack hoping that Britain would see the 13 colonies as too insignificant to get seriously involved , which turned out to be a major miscalculation.

>war ends in their favor
I don't think you know what you're talking about. Declaring independence was an incredibly political move to garner support from Britain's enemies. Although it did take a bit of time for diplomats to convince them, France and Spain decided to assist them (although Spain did it in secret to prevent backlash while France did so openly).
By definition they didn't overestimate themselves because they won in the end, which was exactly where they were estimating themselves. By your logic, America entering WWII was them overestimating themselves, because they had other allies helping out.

verb (used with object), overestimated, overestimating.
to estimate at too high a value, amount, rate, or the like:
Don't overestimate the car's trade-in value.
to hold in too great esteem or to expect too much from:
Don't overestimate him—he's no smarter than you are.
an estimate that is too high.
Origin of overestimate
America estimated that by declaring independence, they could garner the support of other nations to assist them in kicking out the British. Their endeavor was a success, and in doing so they, and several other nations caused the British to surrender. There was a chance that this could fail, but it wasn't simply up to blind luck. I am not saying that the U.S. is a perfect nation and I have no idea how you thought I said anything even close to that, but in this specific case they had correctly estimated that they could gain help, and in doing so win the war.
