ok , forgive my misleading wording.

what i meant was , don't give the very first time america overestimated itself , and instead find a time where it didn't.

because clearly you're cherry picking for your argument , while the answer to your redundant question is already given in this thread.

You're saying America overestimated itself?

I may not be a historian but I believe the U.S. was on the winning side, ergo not overestimating itself.
User avatar #100 - internetexplain (04/12/2015) [-]
trying to fight britain was something that was way over your heard and if half of europe didn't get involved in your favour , there would be no U.S , and you wouldn't be sitting here , being butthurt and arguing with fallacies.
User avatar #101 - meganinja (04/12/2015) [-]
They declared independence because they knew it could work. Using other skills such as diplomacy they ensured their survival as a country.
User avatar #103 - internetexplain (04/12/2015) [-]
yeah , no , you wish.
they declared independence without any assurance of support from outside , Washington just launched the attack hoping that Britain would see the 13 colonies as too insignificant to get seriously involved , which turned out to be a major miscalculation.
User avatar #104 - meganinja (04/12/2015) [-]
>Major miscalculation
>war ends in their favor

I don't think you know what you're talking about. Declaring independence was an incredibly political move to garner support from Britain's enemies. Although it did take a bit of time for diplomats to convince them, France and Spain decided to assist them (although Spain did it in secret to prevent backlash while France did so openly).

By definition they didn't overestimate themselves because they won in the end, which was exactly where they were estimating themselves. By your logic, America entering WWII was them overestimating themselves, because they had other allies helping out.
User avatar #106 - internetexplain (04/12/2015) [-]
please , tell me more about how luck is a calculable and renders any mistakes you've made invalid.
User avatar #108 - meganinja (04/12/2015) [-]
>luck

I don't see how it's luck, they calculated they could get France into helping them out, and it's what they did. You're a dumbass.

so winning makes you perfect yes?

hey guys , everyone call the newspaper , winning anything at all by any means necessary now renders all your flaws invalid , people can finally be perfect just by winning things!
User avatar #107 - meganinja (04/12/2015) [-]
Way to completely ignore my comment and put words in my mouth. I never said America was great, perfect, etc... But they didn't overestimate themselves if they were on the winning side.

verb (used with object), overestimated, overestimating.
1.
to estimate at too high a value, amount, rate, or the like:
Don't overestimate the car's trade-in value.
2.
to hold in too great esteem or to expect too much from:
Don't overestimate him—he's no smarter than you are.
noun
3.
an estimate that is too high.
Origin of overestimate

America estimated that by declaring independence, they could garner the support of other nations to assist them in kicking out the British. Their endeavor was a success, and in doing so they, and several other nations caused the British to surrender. There was a chance that this could fail, but it wasn't simply up to blind luck. I am not saying that the U.S. is a perfect nation and I have no idea how you thought I said anything even close to that, but in this specific case they had correctly estimated that they could gain help, and in doing so win the war.
