There is actually one other account of a wraith other than ringwraiths. Gorlim, one of 12 companions of Ladros, betrayed his friends when he was brought before Sauron and was told that if he revealed his companions hideout, he would be reunited with his wife (Context being, Ladros fell to evil forces in the First Age, and Gorlim, along with his 12 companions, of which included Beren, the very same who had a romance with Luthien) and he, infact, did betray his comrades. He did see his wife, but Sauron did nothing more than show him an illusion, as Gorlim's wife was already dead, and he was then killed by Orcs.
He later appears to Beren as a Wraith, after everyone out of the 12 except Beren had been killed, and confessed what he had done, giving Beren the chance to get his bloodlines heirloom and escape with his life.
Other than this, my other point is, a wraith doesn't HAVE to already existed, written by Tolkien's genius hand, for a new story including a wraith to pop up, seeing as how a wraith can be formed by means other than having a life dragged out by a Ring of Power.
User avatar #182 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
I know that a wraith doesn't have to already exist for the story to work, I just don't like the circumstances. I checked and the game takes place in between the Hobbit and LotR, Sauron had no kind of ability at that time, much less being able to grant power to a mortal.
User avatar #186 - stupidaccounts (07/11/2014) [-]
Yeah, this irks me as well. I, myself, won't be getting the game right as it comes out, for various reasons, the first being this one, I really want to see other reviews by fellow Tolkien fans, to see if it's a piece of crap or really just a game that is really amazing with a few (or, what I'm going to assume is a lot) of plot holes, and that it really isn't an Assassin's Creed clone trying to push itself into the LoTR stories.
User avatar #187 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
Watchdogs was supposed to be great and we all know how that worked out. Hype is a dangerous thing.
User avatar #188 - stupidaccounts (07/11/2014) [-]
I'll admit, Shadow of Mordor had me jumping up and down in my chair, almost as excited as I was when I got The Fellowship of The Ring as a child... Then more and more details came out about it and now it's looking iffy. I'm still got my hopes up... But not too high, just in case Monolith takes my hopes and stamps them underneath a spiky boot. We shall see the outcome of this.
Regardless of what happens, we can still all agree that Tolkien's original works and lore are still and will forever be works of supreme art.

Even as many story fallacies the movies had, I will always think that they did the scene with the Balrog perfect, and I will always get chills when I hear "Fly, you fools!" and see him slip over the edge.

You mean the sick as shit Lord of the Balrogs, the one who was feared by all elves and the one that took down Feanor? Nice.
I kind of wish they would do films on the First Age stuff... I've always wanted to see a theatrical version of the War of Wrath done right. The stuff we see in LoTR has always seemed a bit... Incomparable to the scale of the First Age, with entire continents being changed due to a war going on. Done right, of course, not a piece of crap, as some theatrical versions of stories tend to turn out.
User avatar #196 - stupidaccounts (07/11/2014) [-]
Ehhhh... I see your point but honestly, I want the risk to be taken. Maybe if someone who HATES seeing the LoTR universe being deformed were to make one, and at the very least make a decent movie that stuck to the original lore... Men can only dream.

What about fear they instilled upon... well, almost everyone? The sheer horror they represent is kinda obvious, isn't it? Merry was knocked unconscious in Bree when he came upon a Ringwraith. The first 2 points are merely you judging before the game comes out (no real harm there, first impressions are everything when it comes to stuff like this, I can only hope you're wrong) But... You're getting that last point wrong. Ringwraiths are Wraiths, but different. The Nazgul have the power of the 9 Rings of Power given to Middle Earth kings by Sauron. They became wraiths by having their lifetime stretched out till their forms were nothing but hatred filled spectres, similar to what started to happen to Smeagol, but due to his long lifetime, all he became was a shriveled ball of feet, claws, and hatred (and gigantic blue eyes >_>)
Wraiths are made by a few ways; Necromancy, Morgul-blades, or if someone died in Darkness or dishonor.
Anyways, I hope you're dead wrong about Shadow of Mordor, and that it's a effing fantastic game
#168 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
I am fairly certain there are no other "wraiths" in Tokien's works specifically, that doesn't mean in other mythologies if that's what you thought i meant. Also Smeagol thanks you for noticing.

I was pressed for time and couldn't go in depth.
The reasons I am not looking forward to this game are:
1. The story sounds like it's just God of War in Middle-Earth. family dead, seeking vengeance, you know, all that.
2. The whole stolen assets debacle with the guy who worked n Assassin's Creed makes me feel like the gameplay will just be an Assassin's Creed clone.
3. My last point and by far the most important is how the entire storyline from what has been told and from what I've seen in trailers is so against the lore of Tolkien's works it's unbelievable. There are no such thing as "wraith powers" that guy has the force. There are only 9 ringwraiths, that's it, end of story. Also these ringwraiths have no actual powers. You may wonder to yourself "why is this guy so upset about the lore in this game?" Tolkien's lore means everything to me! It's something I'm able to talk about with my Dad,it's something that I've been following and reading up on for years. As if the changes made in the movies by Peter Jackson didn't go far enough now there's some undead guy running around seeking vengeance. Unless there are any other questions, comments, questions, or concerns, this rant is OVER!

User avatar #171 - hadzibg (07/11/2014) [-]
And "Also these ringwraiths have no actual powers."?

Dafuq? If you had even read the books once, you'd know better.
User avatar #172 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
They have heightened senses and are attracted to the ring, I suppose it may depend on what your definition of "powers" is.
User avatar #175 - hadzibg (07/11/2014) [-]
What about fear they instilled upon... well, almost everyone? The sheer horror they represent is kinda obvious, isn't it? Merry was knocked unconscious in Bree when he came upon a Ringwraith. He then fell in a nightmare instilled by some black magic. I could go on, if I weren't so tired. Either way, there's a lot more to the Ringwraiths than just long life, heightened senses at night, and transparent bodies.
User avatar #178 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
Like I said definitions of powers, i was complaining about giving a man actual powers instead of the effects that wraiths have.
User avatar #180 - hadzibg (07/11/2014) [-]
Meh, flashiness. That's one of the main reasons I think I won't like the game. Like you said, it makes it very reminiscent of GoW, and it somehow makes it too arcady for me. Too arcady for a LOTR game, anyway.
User avatar #169 - hadzibg (07/11/2014) [-]
"Tolkien's lore means everything to me!"

Then you should know that there are lesser wraiths in Middle-Earth, usually (but not necessarily) under control of the Nine.
User avatar #170 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
Other entities that could be referred to as traditional "wraiths" I have encountered as going by different interchangeable names. I don't recall the specific term being used outside of the nine. Also the point that the protagonists "wraith powers" are baseless.
User avatar #173 - hadzibg (07/11/2014) [-]
It's a game, it's an adaptation. Guess they needed a source of the main character's magic abilities, no matter how little sense it makes. I suppose healing powers and wisdom and long life of Numenoreans wouldn't be as exciting.
User avatar #176 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
Ooooooooooo, the downfall of Numenor, now that would be interesting.
User avatar #177 - hadzibg (07/11/2014) [-]
Yes, but I was referring to this game and storyline in particular. DoN and basically everything from the Silmarilion is damn epic, maybe too epic to be actually made into a game/movie/series.
User avatar #179 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
I hope they never try to turn anything from the Silmarillion into a movie, way too much story to be portrayed well. i know you were referring to the game, mentioning Numenor just made me think that.
User avatar #181 - hadzibg (07/11/2014) [-]
Maybe a TV series like Game of Thrones, that could be done right, with the right people. Although I have no idea what they would do about the characters that we already saw onscreen. Elves, mainly. I can't imagine Galadriel or Elrond recast.
User avatar #183 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
Being done with the right people, through the right channels that would be fantastic, maybe someday.
#185 - hadzibg (07/11/2014) [-]
Until then, we dream.
#152 - iamchicken (07/10/2014) [-]
Don't care it's a LotR game gonna buy it regardless also it looks fun as fuck. And that's all i care about regarding the game.
User avatar #138 - stupidaccounts (07/10/2014) [-]
User avatar #174 - stupidaccounts (07/11/2014) [-]
#189 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
This is to depict me watching Monolith. I love this picture so damn much.
#190 - stupidaccounts (07/11/2014) [-]
I see your picture, and raise my own favorite
#191 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
That's pretty sick.
#192 - stupidaccounts (07/11/2014) [-]
Even as many story fallacies the movies had, I will always think that they did the scene with the Balrog perfect, and I will always get chills when I hear "Fly, you fools!" and see him slip over the edge.
In another note... Favorite creature/monster/whathaveyou from Tolkien's works? Mine is Ancalagon the Black, hence the picture.
#193 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
Gothmog was a pretty sick badass.
User avatar #194 - stupidaccounts (07/11/2014) [-]
User avatar #195 - Awesomenessniss (07/11/2014) [-]
It's that risk that makes me hope they don't try to take it to the theater.
