Earendil Half-Evlen went into battle upon his ship, Vingilote, the fairest vessel ever built in part by Cirdan himself. With a Silmaril placed upon his brow and aided by a large host of the birds of Manwe the fell beast of Morgoth stood no chance.

How can you lose when you have an army of god-birds on your side, of course he won
User avatar #34 - Awesomenessniss (02/12/2015) [-]
Well he had one of the Silmarils.

whats a silmaril, how did this deafeat a dragon the size of a mountain range
#50 - Awesomenessniss (02/12/2015) [-]
His size is never directly stated, the above is from a fan-made piece of art.
The Silmarils are: I'm going to hide this big block of text. In the beginning when Eru Illuvatar created the Ainur, the children of the music, a group of them chose to leave and create their own world, these are the ones known as the Valar. Some lesser beings, known as the Maiar followed them. When they first created the world of Arda the entire world was a massive circle with a lake in the middle. The Valar found that they had a need for light so two massive lanterns were created and filled with a divine light and placed on pillars on the North and South poiints of the continent. These lamps were destroyed by one of the Valar who represents a fallen angel named Melkor. When this happened the land became tumultuous and unliveable so the Valar fled to the West into the land of Aman. When the pillars fell it radically changed the landscape.
In the land of Aman one of the Valar Yavanna, who is connected to nature, brought two trees into existence through her song, Telperion and Laurelin. These trees provided light for the world. Melkor grew angry and jealous and enlisted the help of a horrible spider-like creature named Ungoliant to poison the trees. Before they were completely killed by this Feanor, one of the greatest of the elves known for his expert craftsmanship was able to save the light of the trees in three gems, the Silmarils.
The Silmarils were of course of great might and importance and were the starting point for the War of the Jewels which takes up most of the body of Tolkien's work The Silmarillion.

There you go, the abridged edition of what the Silmarils are and why they matter. And yes all this text was necessary for you to understand and yes it is definitely the abridged edition.

Ok, let's ignore the fact that Tolkien compared the Maiar to "angels" at least 10 times in his letters and I don't know how often in his writings published in the History of Middle-earth series.
User avatar #195 - Awesomenessniss (02/11/2015) [-]
Like I said, they fit the allegorical role of angels.
#91 - whycantibefunny (02/11/2015) [-]
Technically, Gandalf and the rest of the wizards are Maiar, which are essentially immortal spirits and kind of like lesser gods
User avatar #103 - Awesomenessniss (02/11/2015) [-]
The Maiar are those who followed after the Valar when they left Eru and went into Arda. While i suppose it could make sense to compare them to 'lesser gods' as that is the niche they fill in the scheme of things i believe that is not necessarily how they would be categorized in the lore, I see them as more like servants of the Valar, excluding of course the different entities and fell creatures of Morgoth also denoted as Maiar. The Istari taking the guise of 'angels' of course because they were chosen among from among the Maiar to watch over and aid the denizens of Middle-Earth. Didn't really work as well but hey, we can't all be perfect.

Demigods?
#99 - whycantibefunny (02/11/2015) [-]
No demigods are people with one god parent and one mortal parent. In Tolkeins world, the closest thing to gods are the Valar, and of lesser power are the Maiar. Both fall under the category of a type of being called Ainur, who are owerful and immortal spirits who helped create the universe. After making it, some Ainur went down to it to guard it and they became the Valar (More powerful) and Maiar (Less powerful) Both are types of immortal spirits, but maiar are considerably less powerful, although still godlike. Prominent Maiar include all the wizards, and Balrogs are corrupted Maiar, and prominent Valar include their King Manwe and Melkor, essentially Saurons more powerful boss. But they're still not full gods as they were created by a supreme being called Eru Iluvatar, whos probably the closest thing to a God-like god
User avatar #105 - valigar (02/11/2015) [-]
I wondered that about the Balrog(s)... So that could've happened to Gandalf if he took and was then corrupted by the ring? EPIC.

Also, is it ever explained why the Ainur needed to protect the Universe and/or Arda (is the universe Arda, or is Arda just a planet?)
#106 - whycantibefunny (02/11/2015) [-]
I don't know if Gandalf would've turned into a Balrog from the ring as all the Balrogs came from renouncing Eru and the Valar and followed Melkor, but i suppose that is a slighly badass idea as to what couldve happened. And i don't think a reason is explicitly given, some Ainur just went there because they expressed concern for Creation and wanted to guard it. And yes Arda is just the planet
User avatar #107 - valigar (02/11/2015) [-]
Clearly I must brush up on my Tolkien/LotR Lore... I must know more... but, of course, Tolkien did intend to design his world to be always full of mystery, and thus nearly infinite

They caption the image as "Ladies of PompeiGreece". While the city of Pompeii, like many others in the area, was a Greek settlement it did not gain notoriety until it became a major port in Roman times. That is also very clearly Roman style mosaic.
