The Iliad and The Odyssey
I don't think the part about the river was in troy though, was it?
Fuck that movie.
Take it from me, do yourself a favor and go out and buy a copy of The Iliad translated by Robert Fitzgerald
it's the best translation, I've read dozens
and maybe a piece of paper or a notebook to make yourself a glossary of characters as you come across them because there's at least 200 minor characters, and a dictionary because there are a lot of beautiful words that never get used in modern society.
You will not be disappointed I promise.
Look at all those people who act like they know how d&d works when they most likely just watched critical role once or twice and cant stop with the "le rolled a nat 20 xD maymay".
What's the difference between a natural 20 and a 20? dndxplain
natural 20 is when the die lands on 20
modified 20 is when you get (for example) a 17 on the die but you have a +3 to the roll
nat 20 is with no modifiers (ithink)
Is "nat 20" the "the cake is a lie" now?
Oh, I said "EXDEE"
I SAID "EXDEE"
it's free real estate
I would really encourage people to read the Illiad, it's actually quite fun and far more approachable than I thought.
It may seem a little weird at first, but it's simply because of a few unexpected but easy to explain things. They don't call each other Greeks and Trojans at this time. There are a lot of heroes who contribute besides the main ones. There are at least two heroes with the same name (Ajax) who are distinguished by titles. The pacing is a bit funny with some parts being stretched out conversations and other parts where everything is being rushed through.
It's also a bit surprising that the gods are pretty much exactly like magical invisible humans and they're both worshiped and yet treated in a very familiar and basely human way. The gods struck me as sort of dungeons and dragons like. They had magical items that play a role, including a stat raising special girdle. Zeus was being like a DM talking to younger gods about what they tried to do. The gods got into so many zany plans and disagreements like players at a game. One god pretty much just brings someone back from the dead and acts like the person he raised is sort of a paladin. At least one god gets injured and then flips out and rage quits.
