It isn't insanely common for cats to get hurt outside, but the possibility of a cat getting majorly hurt is still there, and that's enough for I and many others to not let them outside. We don't walk our cats because they're just domestic short hairs and aren't high energy.

Some cats actually enjoy and benefit being walked on a leash outside, such as savanna cats, and I believe Egyptian Mau. It's significantly better than just letting them loose outside on their own where they can get seriously hurt.

Our cats were indoor/outdoor for a while, but in the same week one got hit by a car (he lived, took him to the vet, got surgery done and he was fine), and my cat "slipped and fell in the neighbor's pool and drowned." We know for a fact that the fucking son of a bitch we called our neighbor was drunk and purposely drowned the cat, but we had no actual proof so it wouldn't have held up in court.

After those incidents I am very against letting cats outside without accompaniment. Dogs are another story, since they're let out in the back yard, and if you have a proper fence there is no way they will get out, as opposed to a cat who can easily just find a way to jump over/crawl under the fence and get loose.

Cats are actually very good at swimming, they just don't like it. So I call complete bullshit on the "slipped and drowned".
User avatar #91 - nurucio (5 hours ago) [-]
That was exactly the point, hence the quotes. We know my neighbor held her down and drowned her, but he told us "oh she slipped and fell in the pool, by the time we noticed she was dead." Yeah, okay buddy. He was known for being abusive to anything he could get his hands on.
There was no physical proof, so we couldn't do anything, but we know it was him.

Granted you've had some bad experiences, and I myself lost my last
cat to being hit by a car. But I've known many, many people who own cats,
and they've all been fine being let out.
I myself just don't think that 'bubble-wrapping' the cat to ensure it's safe all
the time is necessarily the kindest thing to do. It's like letting your kids
run around in a forest or some shit. Sure, they could get hurt, but it's very enlightening for them.

Well if you don't want them to run off and get themselves killed on their first trip outside, why not?
User avatar #43 - Awesomecarrot (15 hours ago) [-]
It won't.
Cats are more than able to handle themselves outside, and keeping a cat indoors is just wrong.
