Engineering: There is no such thing as over-doing it

Being A Complete Fucking Retard: Thinking engineering is about "LOL FUCK IT BUILD IT AS BIG AS WE FUCKING CAN BECAUSE LOL" and not about "Let's do the most simple and efficient possible thing to get the job done."

Well that's how Nazi engineers did things.

PG (Paralyzed Guy): I need your help or I'll get fired!
Engineer: What's the problem?
PG: I'm a great crane operator but its hard to get up to the cockpit due to both of my legs being paralyzed.
Engineer: Say no more, your boss gave me the okay.

for a wheelchair ramp it's recommended you have 1 foot of length for every inch of rise. A ramp high enough to reach the normal height of the cockpit of a heavy machine like that would have to wind back and forth and it would have him exhausted just going up and down it. This was the better solution long term.
#24 - IamPinhead (09/19/2015) [-]
It's also a much less rad solution.

You can't take the ramp with you to every site. This is a solution with a small form factor that will work almost everywhere.

If you were a good creative engineer like me you would have thought of a lever-operated foldable ramp hold attachment to the side of the cockpit that supports the ramp and folds it down when he pushes a button but that's just innovation
User avatar #45 - Einsty (09/19/2015) [-]
A ramp is too big if it has to be inclined the way it should. I tried to go up a ramp on a wheelchair, it's a fucking pain. So you'd need a lift. Lift is also big, so when stowed, it would obscure vision or hinder the vehicle mobility.

Also, instead of rolling a picture, you could have attached a drawing of what the hell is "foldable ramp hold attachment to the side" supposed to look like.
#56 - thetrapkiller (09/19/2015) [-]
How the fuck is it too big? Going up a ramp for me isn't such a pain, I don't know why it is for you but here's my design. It's a sketch but it's fucking easy to understand. Lift is small and will not hinder vision or mobility.

Look, you are obviously not getting the picture and I would not further speak to such a retard. My condolences to this disabled man and his boss, but no condolences to YOUR disability...

>ramp covers the door
How is this not hindering visibility?

Also, your descriptive geometry skill went unused on this one, try using some different projection. I have multiple ideas what this could represent in 3D space and none of them make any particular sense.
#66 - thetrapkiller (09/19/2015) [-]
>needing to see through the door
Do you operate machinery? Doesn't sound like you do.

>your descriptive geometry skill
Ok, you're fucking retarded first of all. You call MS paint geometry skill? Obviously you're under the influence or some shit because I drew this in only 5 minutes. Your ideas make no sense? Well that's because you have none. Come back to me later when you're fucking relevant. Jesus Christ on a stick your brain cell count must be negative.
User avatar #67 - Einsty (09/19/2015) [-]
You said you were an engineer. That would imply you know basic geometry and technical drawing principles, yet you demonstrated a lack of such understanding.

After numerous attempts, I fail to understand your idea and given the low quality of your explanation and drawing, it is not surprising.

Please return your degree if you have one, if not, please refrain from further attempts to design access enabling devices for the disabled. The world will be safer that way.
Thank you.
#68 - thetrapkiller (09/19/2015) [-]
I've already returned to watching youtube read greentexts after you failed to demonstrate an idea at all, let alone one that was better than mine.

Your loss is grave, and the best method of recovery is to stop using the Internet for a while.
#57 - thetrapkiller (09/19/2015) [-]
Oh and by the way, if he's having trouble getting up on the first lift, he can try modding his wheelchair with these
#35 - anon (09/19/2015) [-]
Where does the ramp fold down to, retard?
#58 - thetrapkiller (09/19/2015) [-]
You're the retard if you think the ramp folds down to the side or up towards the sky.
User avatar #2 - OtisMcWonderful (09/18/2015) [-]
That ramp would be fuckhueg though. The ADA required slope for wheelchair ramps is 12" of ramp for every inch of rise. And I assume that other countries have similar requirements. To put that into perspective, you'd need a 36 foot long ramp just to go up 3 feet, and the excavator cab is a bit higher than that. Then you'd need to either make it retract into the excavator, which obviously doesn't have room for a ramp of such length, even if the ramp folded or something. Or you could have someone else remove the ramp after he gets into the cab, but then you lose the advantage of having a single operator excavator. And even if you did that, where would you store a long-ass ramp while it isn't needed?

It doesn't take an engineer to see that a ramp is a much worse solution than just having the cab lower itself. He can climb into and out of the cab like this, just as he would a car.
#26 - xgolgothax (09/19/2015) [-]
The fact that you know this is awesome. Have a thumb.
User avatar #10 - pokemonstheshiz (09/18/2015) [-]
Could his coworkers not just help him in/out of the cab? Still cool though, and I don't see a real reason why crane manufacturers couldn't make it accessible in the first place
User avatar #11 - OtisMcWonderful (09/18/2015) [-]
It's a waste of time. You have to climb into these things, so they'd have to climb while carrying him, both in and out. There isn't always going to be someone right next to it ready to get him out every time he needs to either.

They're better off just spending the money to make it accessible to their already skilled operator rather than hire a new one or have him depend on someone else to do his job.
