In both cases, "signs" or "words in a book" don't stop either from happening. If they want to get a legal partnership, they can have a different word, end of story. As for guns, if your son has never watched a movie with people shooting and doesn't know to run and hide, then he is too sheltered.

The signs are so that if someone is found with a gun they can't say they were not told they couldn't have one, kinda like beware of dogs signs

It's basically the same logic. Marriage is not an exclusively christian tradition. It exists in most cultures and religions both current and historical. Whyever people argue that gay marriage is wrong because marriage is christian is beyond me.
