I have a friend who recently got back from living in Germany for a few years. According to him and his family (so I'm not saying the information is 100% accurate) they have only fairly recently started teaching children about the holocaust in school, because Nazi-like political parties are gaining attention.

I'm german and this is true when it comes to the former GDR. In West Germany though the holocaust has always been a major topic in school.
This is why right-wing extremist parties have a larger, but still insignificantly low, number of voters in the less wealthier east than in the west.
