why cant we do something like this to generate electricity?
User avatar #46 to #40 - quotes (09/03/2014) [-]
it explodes at the end first of all
but the biggest reason is the amount generated is so small and the whole stop it from exploding would require some energy used to slow it when it gets to fast

so cost to energy created wouldnt be nearly enough to be worth doing
User avatar #52 to #46 - imoriginalposter (09/03/2014) [-]
or, you know, just glue the structure together.
User avatar #53 to #52 - quotes (09/03/2014) [-]
so how does it spin freely
User avatar #54 to #53 - imoriginalposter (09/03/2014) [-]
As you can see, the chain doesn't explode, just the magnetice structure that is rotating and thats just because the centrifugal force of the rotation outclassed the strength of the mangetic field holding the structure together.
User avatar #59 to #54 - quotes (09/03/2014) [-]
trust me even glued it falls off we tried it in class
i dont know exactly what causes it it just eventually cant stand even the chain falls
it does last significantly longer tho

now im not saying there isnt a perfect way but just gluing it doesnt work

also as i stated that wasnt my main point
my main point was it wouldnt create enough energy large scale

a solution we had planed in class was
the part we would attach that generates electricity would have a speed thing in it
as the speed increase it increased tension firstly this would generate more energy as it would effect the energy creation device more stronger
secondly this would slow the speed down preventing all disasters

but even with that in mind large scale magnets dont work exactly the same way and the energy created isnt enough for cost to make and space used
#109 to #59 - John Cena (09/04/2014) [-]
I'm not sure, but i think they are blowing through the straw to make it spin. So... I have no idea what you are talking about generating electricity and what not.
User avatar #110 to #109 - quotes (09/04/2014) [-]
you really are no fun
anon
i was waiting for someone to call me out on doing this in class
User avatar #111 to #110 - quotes (09/04/2014) [-]
if you even think about it when have these little balls ever really repelled eachother
User avatar #56 to #54 - quotes (09/03/2014) [-]
the speed will still detatch it at the part connecting the structure to the chain
and you cant glue that part else it wouldnt spin
i had the same idea at first as well
User avatar #57 to #46 - twentyseconds ONLINE (09/03/2014) [-]
why don't they use magnets that don't explode? like bigger more solid ones attached to metal?
User avatar #47 to #46 - lanfearandthecup (09/03/2014) [-]
oh i didnt see it explode lol
User avatar #80 to #24 - zonryu ONLINE (09/03/2014) [-]
now if we could make a generator out of it and keep it from exploding we would be golden

He tried to open it and if you look carefully you can see that some of the magnets in the bottom didnt detach so it was already screwed up. might as well mush it up and start again.

#123 to #120 - skiskate (09/04/2014) [-]
OK FJ. Lets do some math!

The cube is 24x24x24
13824 magnets in total

The standard bucky ball cube is 6x6x6
216 magnets in total

13624/216 = 64 Bucky ball cubes

64 x $30 = $1920 in total!
