Dude I watched this WHOLE debate yesterday.

They were asking Nye questions about origins, knowing they aren't answered yet, and feeling superior when he said truthfully - "We don't know".

And this old dude, so edgy. "I'll just have three words since Mr. Nye had three million..."

Punching someone for voicing their opinion, even if they are incorrect? That's the right course of action? Because I thought that a normal person didn't go around punching people in the face for being wrong.

I really hate that this idiot moron, small minded, close minded, redundant, false support. So many ways to describe what happened there was chosen to represent the Christian side of things against a well liked, charismatic, and intelligent man in Bill Nye. Whole thing felt like a set up to me

I love how that was one of his few "retreat moments" where he claimed the word of god was written in the book.

Now I am a pretty science-y person but I'm not closed minded. Nye stated that the Bible was written thousands of years ago, by a man, and since then has been translated and interpreted many times by other men. How is it that Ham keeps going back to his books and believing that god physically wrote in them and were never changed since then?

It seems like a very closed minded thing for Ken to have taken Bill's presentation seriously and ignore that fact and more.

Well, as soon as I heard Ham I knew where that was going. Well, I think the debate's result was already decided. Putting an open minded person against a close minded one leaves a pretty straight forward result. I mean, Bill had it going the whole thing. Of course, Bill could lower himself to Ham's level and could have lost or won but still lost because ken said so.

Everyone should watch this video, its quite telling to how awesome our country is in regard to these sort of debates.
I love funny junk, but i find it amazing how confused the people on this site are. Many are atheists, sure, but they dont even understand the other side.
Now, for all those posts i have seen that say things like, "i am a Christian, but I believe in evolution".
Evolution and God are not inclusive. You cannot have both. Evolution is man's way of showing how everything around us came to be WITHOUT GOD. so you cannot have it both ways. And finally...
If you put the words, I am a Christian... and then cuss, or make some sort of remark that is not appropriate. I need to point you to Matthew 7. where it says "You will know them by their fruits". AKA. their actions.
Debate is great.. and it should always be something we do. Watch the video, it explains it alot better than i can,
User avatar #72 to #65 - shannonrw (02/06/2014) [-]
That's not true though. Maybe that's YOUR personal view on it, they're not mutually exclusive. A lot of christians, like me, think that evolution could have been the tool God used to change the world over time, that he "guided" the process, so to speak. You CAN believe in both, no where does it say in the definition of evolution "without God". Those are your words, not anyone else's.
#77 to #72 - anon (02/06/2014) [-]
Actually, they're mutually exclusive. The theory of evolution purports that the life evolved from previous forms by natural selection, therefore without God. Furthermore, evolution almost always goes hand-in-hand with theories such as The Big Bang Theory, which was a random "explosion" of energy, eventually coagulating into our known universe.
The Bible, however, details that the world /universe were created in exactly seven days, period. While Genesis does focus largely on earth itself, it also goes into the creation of stars and other heavenly bodies, if briefly. God in the Bible also states repeatedly that he created all things, or that stuff sprung into existence by his hand, if you will (see Job for proof, its quite extensive).
In conclusion, no matter what you say, you are either an evolutionist and an atheist, or a creationist and a Cristian.
(and before you say it, I'm a converted atheist. Used to be Christian and have taken extensive classes in both theology and evolution)
#79 to #77 - dontgetmadbro (02/06/2014) [-]
So the Athiests anon's helped me out.. I appreciated it.
I'd just like to say...
its so annoying when people like Shannonrw say things like "God used evolution"... all that tells me and any one else who paid attention in school is that you have no idea what youre talking about.
User avatar #83 to #79 - shannonrw (02/07/2014) [-]
Actually, maybe you should hold off on assuming that you know all of my beliefs after one post on funnyjunk. I'm pretty sure I paid attention in science class, considering that I'm a double major in physics and astronomy right now. Second, I never said the world was 6,000 years old. Anyone who believes that, or anything else in the bible really, well, I disagree with them but that's their choice. You can be a christian without believing a 3,000 year old book that has been translated over millennia. That really just goes to show your own ignorance, because you just can't accept that there are open and close minded people of all sorts, your religion has nothing to do with it. And as a matter of fact, I quite literally can believe whatever I choose. And judging by the way you said "I know you're not going to watch it", you obviously have some very strongly held preconceived notions. That's on you, not me. Sorry.

P.S. Actually I did watch it. Anyways, good luck, I bet you're a hit at parties.
#85 to #83 - dontgetmadbro (02/07/2014) [-]
Im sorry, I did jump the gun on judging you and I am sorry.
I want to go to one point in your last response
. . "You can be a christian without believing a 3,000 year old book that has been translated over millennia." You said that... and I just wanna tell you that you cannot be a Christian if you dont believe the Bible. I dont know how you justify calling youself a Christ follower with out His word.
The first verse of John clearly says that Christ is the word. I reallly think you need to rethink your worldview if you call youself a Christian yet condemn the Bible as fallible.
User avatar #87 to #85 - funbaggy (02/08/2014) [-]
Evolution does not explain how life began, only how it changes. I don't see any reason why shannonrw can not hold both beliefs.
#88 to #87 - dontgetmadbro (02/10/2014) [-]
Evolution explains how humans and other life forms came to be WITHOUT God. Therefore to subscribe to the belief of evolution and God makes you a person who believes in two things that disprove each other.
User avatar #90 to #88 - funbaggy (02/10/2014) [-]
No where in the theory of evolution does it say "and this is how humans came to be without god" If someone believes god worked through evolution then I see on problem with it. Considering most Christians chalk up the creation story as metaphorical there should be no contradiction anyway. And before you say I have no idea what Christians believe, I went to a Catholic private school for 14 years.
#91 to #90 - dontgetmadbro (02/10/2014) [-]
well I wasn't going to say that you have no idea what you're talking about, you seem cool.
But how can you hold both, they contradict each other. As I have said, and an Anon above, evolution is a way to explain how Humans and other life forms came to be naturally. Meaning with no outside/supernatural help. so to say "I believe in evolution" you are saying that you believe in something that has no place for God, thus eliminating him. So to believe in evolution but claim to be a Christian is being a hypocrite? Show me where I am wrong ?
User avatar #86 to #85 - shannonrw (02/07/2014) [-]
It's okay, it's just one of my biggest pet peeves since it's a pretty common thing in my situation.

The thing is about christianity is that it comes down to just a few MAIN points, accept Jesus, have a relationship with God, be a good person and treat others with acceptance and respect. I try to do that. To be a christian means you believe in God and Jesus as your savior, not that you believe the entire old testament. You'll find that a LOT of christians no longer believe the old testament, and some in the new. I can clearly tell that you're atheist or agnostic, so I'd really appreciate it if you would not try to tell me how my own religion works, as you're not a part of it. Christianity doesn't require you to believe all the stories told in the bible, just to accept God and Jesus as your savior and to be a good and loving person. That's the gist of it.
#89 to #86 - dontgetmadbro (02/10/2014) [-]
Im not explaining your religion, I just happen to go to the Largest Christian school in the world, and what you just posted is actually heresy. To say that you can have eternal salvation and NOT believe in parts of the Bible, (A.K.A. Picking and choosing what works for you) is INSANE. "Most Christians dont believe in the O;d Testament" First off, why does that even matter, and second i doubt that is true. It is funny to because most of the events in the Old Testament have been proven to have actually happened, I.E. Noah's Ark.
The Christian faith Hinges on ONE THING, and that is Salvation through Christ. That being said, just because you Prayed a prayer ONE TIME in when you were 12 asking Jesus to come into your heart does not make you a Christian nor does it save you from Hell. I do not mean to be long-winded though thts just what I did, but long story short, if you think that you can self-censor the Bible to your liking, or just not read it, you are totally kidding yourself to think that you are pleasing God and are saved. NO Offense.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8XSa79sU0M
I know you're not gonna watch it.. but wishful thinking..
Just trying to help. You seem cool, but you have a warped view of life and the world if you think you are saved and can believe evolution is true. Just saying....
#78 to #72 - anon (02/06/2014) [-]
P.S.
Also according to the Bible, the earth isn't old enough to support the time evolution would take to effect anything significantly.
