It works because when the air above the paper plane moves with enough velocity, fewer ramdomly moving air molecules impact it from above, meaning that atmospheric pressure does not act with as strong of a downward force on it.  If the plane is placed in the right position, such that there is a smaller air current on the bottom, there is enough atmospheric pressure pushing up on the plane, which generates lift.  If the upward force equals the force of gravity on the plane, then it is in equilibrium.  No net force, no acceleration.  Place the object in the sweet spot delicately, and the velocity is negligible.  The object is fixed in space, relative to the ground.

I'm expecting some condescending answers but why wouldn't this work theoretically?

The only thing that keeps planes aloft is the upwards thrust given by the airflow over the wing. So if they can somehow replicate the shape of a delta wing aircraft on the paper plane, which I don't think is impossible, shouldn't it work?

the reason why lift happens is because air above is displaced while air below remains stagnant... to a degree... thus the "lift" comes from the buoyant force of the air that is no longer being forced down by the air above.

Here we have a plane with equal Fapp in the forward and reverse direction with the air above AND below being displaced, thus created a net lift of zero.

A neat trick. Take a piece of paper and fold it holding on to where the tips meet (don't flatted the fold, just the 4 corners meet.

blow along the top of the paper and the loop will move upwards because the air above it is displaced while the air below it is not.

normal paper planes don't have much in the way of lift... I mean, they're aerodynamic so sometimes you can make small moving flaps that simulate the life flaps on plane wings... but yeah... there's a reason planes fly and paper plane flop.... you know... besides combustion engines...

I thought it was because the shape of the wings(flat on the bottom but rounded on top so the air on top has more distance to travel to meet with the air on bottom so it speeds up) forcing the air to move quickly over the wing then under and since faster air has less pressure it creates lifts. You can compare paper planes to gliders when moving just on a smaller scale and since paper airplanes are not perfect nor have the right shape like a glider which negatively impacts the flight.
