Sad but true, saw a video someone uploaded of a boy getting beaten in a crowded street.

You think anyone helped the kid? No they just stood there took pictres, filmed or ignored the situation complete to go on japping aobut it over facebook afterwards.

Problem is I don't even know what I would've done if I were there.. and thats what concerns me

I saw a video of a man who got his arm torn off in a serious car accident bleeding in the street while people took pictures. Not ONE person helped.
User avatar #23 to #2 - freebrainsforall (06/21/2014) [-]
That has absolutely nothing to do with Facebook. Its a factor of human psychology.

On what basis are you assuming causation?

people need help, all around you people are crying for help both inside and out

As Riggyrigs (Thats fun to say) said, bystander effect.
So, what you need to do is, always go, never assume someone else will do something.
User avatar #16 to #2 - riggyrigs (06/21/2014) [-]
bystander effect. more people in the street means you're less than likely to receive help from witnesses, they'll just walk past you or gather around you and wait for a person sensitive enough to help you. THE BYSTANDER EFFECT apparently you're more than likely to help someone in danger in the street if you are aware of the effect.
If you talk about it right now thinking about how you would have reacted, that means you would have probably helped him.
User avatar #43 to #16 - curtkobain (06/22/2014) [-]
Also, because the group is doing it, you kind of detach yourself from the situation and follow the group, Ie. riots.
#65 to #43 - twilightdusk (06/22/2014) [-]
It's not quite the same. The Bystander effect is more "There's 50 people here also not doing anything, so it's not my fault if I don't do anything either."
User avatar #112 to #65 - curtkobain (06/22/2014) [-]
Quite honestly I'd say it is both. The group is doing it so why should I single my self out and be the odd one, I'll just go with the crowd.

But yes until someone actually helps the person in trouble, people don't do **** . Have to single someone out for their help to make them actually responsible.

like we are a step up or something? Posting funny comments for imaginary internet points is pretty damn fun personally.

Hell, even the artist is addicted to attention. i mean, why would you make a comic unless you like doing something that gets attention? Why would Marc Maron say that about facebook unless he has the burning desire to hear someone say 'that's a good point'.

there are extremely few who do not crave approval of others in some form or another. As social creatures, the desire to seek judgement from our peers is ingrained into our minds.
User avatar #31 to #3 - bjornkrage ONLINE (06/22/2014) [-]
Hell yeah. It's a ******* evolutionary, and most definitely vital part of us to crave attention. If we didn't put any effort into finding the best possible mate, we'd have **** for genes. Our DNA would literally be strings of poo.

it's pretty damn important for us to function as well.

some of the people who despise all human contact period are hermits. Not the internet dwelling basement hermit either. I mean the honest to god 'live in the woods alone for years' hermits and we all know they ain't exactly on the best terms with sanity.
User avatar #7 to #3 - ntobarrev (06/21/2014) [-]
And who ever claimed you're not right? Even Marc Maron, where did he say something that would deny your post? He didn't even write "they". He wrote "we", and even "me" at one point. It's not like he tried to put himself over everyone else.

All in all, unless I've misunderstood you, I'm not sure exactly who your comment is directed at.
User avatar #9 to #7 - vorarephilia (06/21/2014) [-]
He drew facebook users as heroin addicts, it's clear where the artist's perception of social media lies. and I suppose that rubbed me the wrong way, like he's sitting at a drawing tablet with an attitude of 'those poor bastards, addicted to approval of people they barely know. I can't wait until my readers see this one!'

and the first line states amazement over people using facebook and twitter. which is odd to me. if he knew how everyone seeks approval, he wouldn't compare it to seven year olds, he would likely see it more as social animals interacting so efficiently as to cause harm.

I am probably inferring a lot of things out of context, but at the very least 'the douchbags of today' implies OP things of us as different.

User avatar #102 to #9 - brutallyhonest (06/22/2014) [-]
you sound pathetic to be honest.

Calm down, the simply point, without over-analysis; is that we, as a culture and society in 2014, are consumed by all of it. The social media, the phones, computers, it consumes us. It restricts us ALL for truly seeing how life really is. Which is true.
User avatar #51 to #9 - kamikazikraut (06/22/2014) [-]
After reading the last few comments, I'd like to put in my two cents worth...

Maybe he just meant to point out at how much social media affects our everyday lives. Everyday lives outside of our work and hobbies. Rather than spend time with our families and children on our time off, we spend it sitting back, uploading our status', taking photos and videos of life rather than actually living it. Don't get me wrong here, it's nice to have a photo or a video of a memorable event, but sometimes you just have to live it yourself, not while looking through a computer/tv/cell screen.

Maybe he didn't literally mean everyone, but we all know at least someone who uploads a new twit every half hour, or a new pic to ig every time they sit down, and the facebook user always look for the perfect selfie.

Generalizing, we are all douchebags. I love us though.

The only thing that would make this more realistic would be that kid having a tablet or cell phone...

Thoughts?

I feel like an English teacher... The curtains were blue to illustrate the characters sadness **** you, I just like blue!
User avatar #109 to #51 - stupro (06/22/2014) [-]
To put it simply, people are more concerned to make their life appears better than it is to the others rather than actually making it better.
User avatar #56 to #51 - vorarephilia (06/22/2014) [-]
I think I could have worded mine better, but you are right. in the end we are all addicted to attention, some of us just show it more through social media. I also word things better in analogies.

It's a lot like sex, and social media is like porn. Everyone expresses their inborn sexual desires in some way, whether that be through monogamy, being a whore, or through being a pornstar. But inevitably, all three examples show sexual desire in some way.

Same thing with our society, we have those who prefer to stay with friends, the party goers, the stage preformers, and social media junkies. Again all of these examples are just expressing the inborn drive to belong in society.

So when he says : "our culture is emotionally 7 years old" i could honestly respond with 'you are just now noticing our culture is centered around people seeking approval?'

This scene from Deus ex probably explains my position better. If you haven't played the game you can still get it despite some plot development. youtu.be/1b-bijO3uEw

What a load of rubbish.

The average parent does not ignore their child (especially in public) at the expense of their gadget.

The average person is not engaged in some self-obessed twitter frenzy.

Society as a whole is not engaging in online interaction at the expensive of personal interaction.

This kind of trash is made by people who are completely absorbed in their own little Internet world, obsessing over their self worth. Consequently, they can't see out of their little bubble, and thinks the whole world is as distorted and warped as they are.

Yeah lets just assume causation based on vaguely philosophical ******** quotes.

Perfectly ******* logical.

People who are using twitter for approval have psychological issues and would have sought out approval in different ways regardless.

People who ignore their children are not ignoring their children because of ******* twitter. They're doing it because their bad parents.

Theres absolutely no valid evidence that social media actually causes people to do any of these things. The fact that people use social media for it means nothing - theres a million other things they could have used.

Stop assuming that theres a relation when you have no evidence.
