At my school, summer assignments are only for the advanced placement classes. Normal classes don't have summer homework.
User avatar #212 to #36 - comandante (08/27/2013) [-]
It is mostly because some AP classes (very heavy courses designed to get you college credit in high school) just have way too much to cover in a year, and so teachers try to get students to cover a good chunk of the material by themselves. For example, in my old Advanced Placement chemistry class, during the summer students were required to completely understand chem at the "basics", which for some may be difficult
#116 to #36 - anon (08/27/2013) [-]
One of the worst parts of the US educational system. They give us work either to prepare us for our upcoming courses or just to keep our brains from turning into mush. Of course, it always fails on both accounts.

I know, it always felt like everybody wanted me to be under stress and over performing 24/7. The stress nearly drove me to my deathbed, which is why I decided a long time ago that destroying yourself to please everyone else wasn't worth it.

With the least amount of effort I got average grades. And I plan to live my life that way. I'll only work hard for things I actually care about.

I am 33 years old. Pleas allow me to furnish you with the wisdom of my years. Nothing, I repeat, NOTHING you do in school will be of any use. Sure, the grades let you get into college but that's it. In college you'll learn something you may or may not use. If you have a career in mind then you'll do fine. Go study to be a doctor or a carpenter, I personally became a sign language interpreter. But again I say school work is useless. Since I left school SEVENTEEN years ago I have NEVER used trig, I have not used the atomic weight of carbon to assist me, I have not used the date of the war of Independence to pay my rent.
Why do I tell you all this? Well it's so you realise that stressing out over **** that matters not, is a bloody stupid waste of your time, emotional mind and life in general.
Be good to good people, try and do the right thing. People will thank you and making someone happy is a FAR better use of your time and energy than trying to write some ****** 5 page paper that will be read once and then shredded into bedding for the school rat.
Seriously, what do you think they do with those papers you write? Keep them to read over and over? NO. Your actions make people happy, your paper wastes 5 minutes of a teachers time and he gets paid for this, you dont.
If the teacher sets 30 students off doing 5 page essays this is is a total of 150 pages. 5 classes doing this in a week is a total of 750 pages. At 5 minutes a page (assuming he reads and absorbs it and doesn't just scan it) it's a total of 62.5 hours of reading a week, add on to this 40 hours at school working is a total of 100 hours a week.
Be good to people, Be nice to people who deserve it and quit stressing over useless **** !

We need a taste of everything in life. It's not like they can just change the school curriculum to only teach things that everybody does on a daily basis. WHat would happen to those who actually do things like trigonometry or atomic weights and such? How would they flourish?
In the words of Iroh; "It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If we take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale."
#398 to #300 - freenarative (08/28/2013) [-]
If I'd had the choice I'd say do a core curriculum of every day things. I.E. simple maths, reading writing and sports (physical development) then give kids the option to take classes in things they would flourish in. I failed religious studies and over 5 years I wasted THOUSANDS of hours doing something that was of NO use and bored me. I would have rather put the extra time into physics and got an A grade in that instead of the U[ngraded] grade I got in RE
This is how I think kids would flourish. BUT, personal opinion. It matters, not.

Not to be a dick or anything, but you don't use trig, or the weight of a carbon atom because you're a sign language interpreter, if you were an architect, or a chemist those things would be of great importance to you.

On top of this, I believe that school turns you into a well-rounded person and teaches you how to work. That way, you can actually make it in the world when you actually do have to work.
User avatar #259 to #254 - deepgreen (08/28/2013) [-]
I agree, especially university or a phd shows what true hard work is. Although high school depending on teachers, can also be a tough time, in my opinion it can't be compared to the perseverance and hard work required for a thesis at uni.
User avatar #260 to #259 - yuukoku (08/28/2013) [-]
