You get 40k from the Loanshark, pay the hitman 20k to kill the loanshark.

To make it less confusing, it should say, "borrow $40,000 from loanshark"

You could cut out the middle man and kill the loan shark yourself.

You would have to be good at covering up a murder though, and very discreet when initially dealing with the loan shark, so no one associates you with the dead loanshark.

Do it once a month, a different city every month. The only problem is building up trust.

invent a false rep started by yourself and different versions of yourself. then become your real identity and fade away into a new life.

That seems easier said than done. What you could do is develop a set of contacts in various cities, let them spread your rep, and then give them a cut. Or offer the loan shark a rate (if they deal with rates, but there would definitely be interest) that they can't refuse.

But then they'd be expecting to be offed with rates that high.

Pretty sure he meant you're getting 40 from the loan shark. Then spending 20 of it to kill him.

yup.
but now you're even dumber than him for thinking there's any reason to give money to a loan shark you've never met

Someone else will take the loanshark's place and pursue you for the money AND, if traced to you, the hit.

They're probably more organized than we'd think.

I'm pretty sure it would be less work and more safe to just rob $20,000 from a bank
